GIS Lab Practice video-10 {Digitizing Raster and Adding Attributes}
Digitizing is one of the most common tasks that a GIS
Specialist has to do. Often a large amount of 'GIS time' is
spent in digitizing raster data to create vector layers that
you use in your analysis. In this class, we will take the
raster above and digitize it to create a vector point, line
and polygon layers. We are going to use the shapefiles we have created to
represent different features on our raster layer.
In QGIS, use "Toggle editing" button on the shapefile layer
you want to digitize and trace features of interest from the
raster using the "add feature" button.
To terminate your tracing/digitizing mode, click the left
mouse and the attribute box will appear. Enter the feature's
attribute or just leave it blank and click "Ok" if you don't
want to.
Repeat the process until all features of interest are
digitized. The process described above is applicable to
point, line and polygon shapefiles.
To terminate the editing/digitizing mode click "toggle
editing" button, At the end of the day, you
should have created and digitized shapefile layers including
trees, buildings, stream, minor-roads, major-roads, landuses,
etc
