GIS Lab Practice video-11 {Adding Attribute Data to Vector Layer}

CREATING ATTRIBUTE TABLE (FIELDS):
In QGIS, this could be done during the digitizing stage. As
you digitize a feature, you will immediately add its
attributes. However, you can ignore adding it till after
digitizing and that is what we have done in this lab
exercise.

To open/show the attribute table of each layer, right click
on the layer and select "Open attribute table". Here we have
opened the attribute table of "Minor_Roads" layer and from
our record, we have 32 features in that layer (i.e. 32 minor
roads where digitized).

Try opening the attribute table of other layers to see how
many features they have in there?

The "Attribute table" box is where you will add additional
attributes to the layer, and where you will conduct query
analysis on your project data. We shall see more of these in
the next coming sections.

ADDING ATTRIBUTES TO VECTOR LAYER:
To add attributes to layers, in QGIS open the layer attribute
table and on the "toggle editing mode" then click "New
column" button.

The add column/field box will appear, fill in the
column/field name, comment (optional), type, width and click
on "Ok" to create column/field for that layer.

You can add more columns/fields by repeating the above
process. After which you will fill the cells/rows with
corresponding information as identified on the map.
Always save your edits by clicking on the "save" button
beside "toggle editing mode" button.
