Pete's Dragon is out and after watching Jeremy yell at Chris throughout that video I'm glad I chose How to Train Your Dragon for this week. Not a movie many didn't like, but here's everything right with How to Train Your Dragon anyway. Next week very large things.

Cool fact: The scene where hiccup and toothless fly for the first time (Song called Test drive) Is actually toothless's theme and hiccups theme melded together which is why it's such an impacting moment. It shows them melding together visually and musically at the same time!

6:23 One thing I particularly appreciate about this scene is how previously Toothless couldn't manage to escape that big hole in the ground even after days of attempts, yet now he nails it immediately since he's rushing to save his friend... that's powerful

When Hiccup raises the dagger, what Toothless does just breaks my heart, he's too ready for his death.

3:40
Toothless briefly hesitates before moving forward to meet Hiccup's hand. This was actually a glitch, but they liked it so much that they decided to leave it in.

Something you didn't touch on is Toothless' understanding of apologies. Its only when Astrid apologized to Hiccup that Toothless calmed down and flew more gently. More important, Toothless didn't reveal Hiccup to be alive at the end until he heard Stoic apologize. Then he unfolded his wings revealing that he had saved him.

Ok so How to Train Your Dragon has LITERALLY the best soundtrack, let’s talk about that for a second.

I feel like the door bouncing open again is to represent how their relationship isn't beyond repair and foreshadows then reconciling later.

I love the way Astrid and Hiccup’s relationship plays out, too. At first, she thinks he’s weak, a coward. But she slowly grows to appreciate his best qualities. Namely, his ingenuity, mercy, and genuine bravery for even daring to tame a Night Fury. She grows to like him as he is, and lets her tough girl exterior break down a bit to let him in. It’s really heartwarming and sweet.

I'd like to point out an Astrid win when she first saw Toothless. She told Hiccup to run not expecting to get out alive but giving Hiccup a chance to escape.

Did anyone else notice the amazing foreshadowing? First scene of the movie he says, "I'll kill a dragon, my life will get infinitely better, I might even get a date."

Then Hiccup kills the Red Death and that's exactly what happens.

My favorite scene in an animated film is the “Test Flight” scene where Hiccup has to let go and lean into his instinct. The score for that scene is probably one of the best pieces of music I have experienced. The reason I love it so much is because of the rush of emotion it makes you feel. Also life hack: the HTTYD soundtrack is the best studying music.

Another thing I like about the movie is that if you remember, when hiccup was in his first day of dragon training, gobber saved hiccup from meatlug and gobber said ‘ A dragon will always go for the kill’. Then hiccup questioned himself on why toothless didn’t kill him and says ‘ So why didn’t you’?. Now towards the end when the vikings tribe go to the dragon nest, Hiccup said ‘ Why didn’t I kill that dragon when I found it in the woods, Wouldn’t it be better for everyone’? So Astrid said ‘ Yep the rest of us would’ve done it, SO why didn’t you?
Man I love that 😀

5:48 "thanks for nothing, you useless reptile". LOL Hiccup's sarcastic and sassy banter is memorable. Jay Baruchel's voice acting is really something!

9:23 is probably my favorite shot in all of movie history. It's such a powerful shot to show how they've both lost a piece of themselves (On the same side) and that hiccup helps toothless fly and now it shows toothless helping hiccup to walk. It's so great that they made such a strong movie with such amazing amputee characters who aren't slowed down by what they don't have.

Fun fact:

Toothless hesitating before putting his head under Hiccups hand was a glitch, but they liked the scene so much they decided to keep it in. A true demonstration of how mess ups can be amazing in result. (Not all the time though, obviously.)

Okay but can we agree that John Powell's soundtrack is the greatest animated movie soundtrack to date? Like, in the forest drawing scene with the sticks, the slow build-up and climax is simply bliss. You listen to Forbidden Friends (the music from that scene) on its own and just get transported to the forest, its insane.

There were a lot of little things that made this film great. One thing people tend to overlook: this is one of the few instances where the human and the animal communicate both ways as equals. Hiccup doesn't train Toothless like a dog; Toothless gives Hiccup obvious cues expecting him to react. The movie pretty much telegraphs dragons use food to barter for their safety, but it gets ignored and later retconned to mind control, which is a shame.

Also, it's interesting to note Hiccup isn't a useless Viking, either: he's an apprentice blacksmith. It would be easy to have Hiccup be an outright reject nobody wants (meaning: a lot of other stories would have and have started like that), but no, we're told right from the start: his place is in there, not on the battlefield. He has his place in their village, he just doesn't like it.

It still hurts my soul seeing this title knowing there won't be such a great movie about dragons again
