Dealing with this now. It's usually old salty nurses. My goal is to be a CRNA one day

People say this but I had the HARDEST time getting into my preferred specialties, and I’ve worked in the hospital setting for 2.5 years. Spent months applying and interviewing for L&D, Peds, and NICU and everything fell flat. Most of them want experience too. Started having more luck when I started applying for med Surg lol. I think it’s better to prioritize which hospital you want, pay, hours, training, etc. more than specialty because med Surg is a great learning experience and is an amazing foot in the door to get into your specialty of choice in that or any other hospital! You could choose a dream specialty at a bad hospital with barely any support, little pay, long contracts and be miserable.

Med Surg will give you the best base if you don't know exactly what you should do yet.

Even though med surg may provide better skills, it’s not worth pushing yourself to do it if it’s going to burn you out twice as fast. Everybody should do what they can to avoid burnout, even new grads. It creeps up on you and one day you realize you’re so worn out you choose to abandon the profession all together.

Yes, I’ll start my career in an environment where I know I’ll hate my choices and career a year later. Respect to med surg nurses, couldn’t be me

I actually think going to med surg is sound advice even if we know we want to do a specialty. If we can get our egos out of the way, it is probably the best place to start if you want sharp skills. I’m not an old nurse but not new either - about 12 years in. I went to other areas first…long term care, home health, school nursing, OR…and lost almost all my skills. Med surg gives a new nurse perspective and helps to learn basic skills like IVs, med management, catheters, etc. some other areas (like ICU) require all skills to be sharp then move into higher level thinking and skills. The ICU is not the place be learning basic nursing skills in my opinion.
