So I’m a 50 year old man. I’ve had an interesting life. As a young kid I was very athletic. I wrestled, boxed, took karate, played baseball and tennis regularly. By the time I got out of high school I was drinking, smoking, and using drugs. At 28 I got clean and sober. I got very healthy. I was running marathons, doing triathlons, and weight training. I also began training in jiu jitsu. At 35 I was 8%~10% body fat. At 38 I spent the majority of a year and a half hospitalized with diverticulitis, C-diff infections and eventually bowel resection surgery. When I was 40 I got pneumonia 3x in one year. I was diagnosed with advanced emphysema. I had the lungs of someone who smoked for 60 years. I only smoked for 6 years. Doctors were baffled and I got fat and depressed. I gained tons of weight. I also developed an opiate addiction even though they were all prescribed. I couldn’t train like I used to so I stopped all together. About 5 years ago I was 240+ lbs. I knew I had to do something. I went back to jiu jitsu. It was amazing. I lost 70lbs in 6 months. I was feeling great but I still had the addiction. Eventually, since the pills were so expensive, I couldn’t afford jiu jitsu so I quit. Fast forward to January of this year. I’m now a full fledged heroin addict (never injected). My 15 year old daughter, who is battling cancer, told me that she couldn’t sleep at night because she was afraid that I was going to die. Well, that was the kick in the ass that I needed to wake up from that nightmare. Somehow, I’m the only person who gets fat on heroin but I did. I weighed 250. I started weight training about 6 weeks ago but my ability to do any cardio is severely limited due to my lungs. I’ve been lifting heavy and eating very cleanly. I avoided the scale because I know it can be deceiving. I started doing 30 minutes on the elliptical after each work out about a week ago. I try to up the intensity a few times during the workout and I’m getting better each time. This morning I stepped on the scale. After 6 weeks of working hard and eating (what always worked for me in the past about 40%, 40%, 20% carbs, protein, and fats) a good diet.... I gained 3 lbs. I feeling like I’m banging my head against the wall. My goal is to get in decent shape so I can get back to jiu jitsu. Any advice for this old knucklehead?

Joined FFP after Thanksgiving of 2018 weighing 218 lbs. Fairly quickly I lost 45 lbs probably within 6 months which included a diet and exercise plan. Now, I just stick to the diet plan and have stayed around 185 lbs. Hate to call it a diet, it's just a life style change, enjoy what I eat and feel better.

The only thing I changed was quality of food. Stay away from processed food. White flour, corn, sugar and soy are killers. Eat fresh and stop eating so damn much. I've dropped 30 pounds.

Dr. A is the first guy to actually speak to someone my age (50+) with no bullshit. Sleep is so critical to weight loss for guys my age. My doctor told me over a decade ago when I turned 40 that I needed to get eight hours of sleep and if I could not get eight, to get seven. I intend to sign up for the program, because I believe that it will easily fit into my busy life. Thank you so much, Dr.!

42! Tragic. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Doing something so amazingly positive for so many people after losing your Dad, is probably the best memorial any father could have wished for from his son.

My father works hard and eats unhealthy as well. I'm really worried about his health. These tips are great because I think he lacks structure outside of work.

Good video, good common sense, And attainable for most men. Too often, people start the schedules that are just not practical for them or they can’t keep up with. You have covered the best basics one can hope for, now probably the most important thing for anyone is to keep dedicated. Personally, psychologically, I always try to tell myself every day, it’s just like brushing my teeth, something I just do every day, and it seems a reasonable request of myself every day.

56 year old veteran with twenty-five years of service here. I believe everyone is different and what works for one person doesn't work for others. Sleep, I agree sleep is one of the most important aspects to healthy long life, but it isn't as easy as just saying you need to get more sleep. After so many years of seeing and doing stuff that no one should ever have to see or do, sleep doesn't come easy and good restful sleep is impossible. I seen three different sleep specialists, non of them knew their ass from a hole in the ground. The medical profession for the most part is a complete joke, the answer to everything is treat the symptom with a freaking pill. 9 years into my retirement I had enough of doctors, pills and the BS and started doing research on my own and today I am 100% Rx free, healthy and get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. I don't drink, do drugs legally or illegally. I switched to a whole food plant-based diet and it changed my life. High blood pressure, gone, high cholesterol gone, the 3 or 4 migraines I suffered with for 28 years have gone, pain in all my joints gone, skin and digestion issues gone, even my eye sight improved.

my decision to lose weight was exactly as you said, I want to see my small daughter grown up, marry, have a family and I want to be healthy there for her! I'm 35 years old and I was 122 Kg, now 96kg and still missing another 15 kgs to lose till June. I stop smoking and drinking, I'm drinking 2, 5 - 3 liters of water daily and I managed to sleep a bit more (around 5-6 hrs per night, instead 3-4 hours)... I still need to work on my sleeping tho and also exercise more cause I was just doing walks. Now I think is time for starting muscle building on GYM as I don't feel as much pain as it was before ( back, legs, joints). Keep up everyone who is doing the same mission! Even if fall, heads up, stand up again and keep doing what is best for you! I want to Live 80+ and I hope I still got this chance!

Thank you for this.
One suggestion for your messaging: don’t tell us we need certain kinds of exercises that are joint friendly. We KNOW our joints don’t work like they used to. We live with it every conscious moment of our lives. And many of us know this because we are in pain.
What I’m looking for is the simple message of what works and is best tolerated.
