How do you do warlock pacts in your D&D game?

"Hi. I'm Bdjriks, but you can call me Erik. I'm a 65 million year old unspeakable horror from the 8th dimension but really 65 million is the new 240. I'm looking for a sugar baby who likes long walks on the beach, sacrificial murder, and spaghetti breakfasts. Swipe right for the best time of your ephemeral existence."

To be fair on the Patrons, they always deliver on their deals of power if you serve them.

I always assumed that the very act of making a pact with a Patron kinda fucks with the character's head, and while they know that they Made the pact, the details are fuzzy until later when they're more skilled and have more control over their new power.

Basically, the Patrons are so powerful that they warp reality, and the warlock has to take the time to re-figure out exactly who they are Pacted to, and what the details of said Pact were

I think of it as your patron doesn't give you any unique abilities that other patrons don't until level 3

Warlocks are cool, but I prefer my were-rat who took one level of Barbarian then multiclassed into Wizard. In combat, he has to avoid going into a rage, or he can't cast spells. "Despite all my mage, I am still just a rat in a rage" :D

Alternate interpretation. Patrons withhold the special sauce until you've proven to be a capable investment.

It could be that the warlock who preformed the ritual connected themselves to the patrons plane of origin and the residual power of the patron powers their magic until level 3 where the patron notices the connection and a proper deal is made.

"Free trials to theor dark knowledge" sounds a hell of a lot like "the first hit is free"

You hear an ominous voice in your head that says "hi. I like you try snapping your fingers real quick for me. Yep, that'll do alright. Let's see what I actually killed me making for me"

It's like the trial period.
Your patron is looking now. They're test driving their new toy, basically.

In paid internship as a warlock would be like working at Disney. Everyone’s dream until you realize you can’t escape.

I feel like it's more you've made a deal with an entity, and that entity is witholding knowledge until it deemes youre ready

Levels 1-2: You get entry level powers in exchange for putting your soul on the Celestial Market.
Level 3: Your patron goes grocery shopping.

Another fun interpretation if you involve lore into the equation. The warlock has unlocked *some* magic but is extremely weak and unable to progress past second level without the help of another being to unlock or allow more power to be used by the warlock in question. Due to this, the Warlock has one of two options:

Form a mutual pact with an entity.

Form a parasitic pact with an entity.

One side, you agree to something for power. The other? Somehow you've learned to hijack a fraction of power from some sort of entity that may or may not kill you should it find out.

"why'd you become a fiendish warlock"
"I forgot to cancel my free trial and it charged my card"

This is why earlier game systems had devices such as the _Lesser Pact_ and _Greater Pact._

You got a bit of power with the lesser Pact, but weren't really bound in until you made the greater pact to unlock the greater power. But you knew who you were dealing with.

Option number 2 could work for some patrons like in the sense that they are giving you a taste of what powers they can offer in an attempt to lure you in and hopefully make you sign the contract and if the patron is a real jerk then you can always have the demand that the warlock does extra things for the them to pay of their debt when they do finally sign the contract

Maybe it's supposed to be like an ouija board thing, where you know you got into contact with a ghost, but you have no idea if it's a good ghost or bad ghost.

I mean the “free trial” idea is pretty good for a corrupting patron, just like how sweet it is at the beginning when you feed into something that you know is wrong but gives you what you need/want in the moment weather that be power or maybe relief from the ailment that you unknowingly got from said patron just to pull you closer
