Really bold of WotC to to specifically nerf the class that relies on a pact with a higher power given their recent exploits.

We are changing Warlock as we believe it has no identity!

They kept hearing that casters are too strong compared to martials and that hexadin/sorlock are abominations and came to the conclusion of "NERF WARLOCK".

I like the idea of the Warlock being a really versatile class that can be built for any role.

I kind of hate the execution.

Wait wait wait so i make a deal with a god older then the primordial universe for magical knowledge, and im only a half caster?

But the bard plays a f*cking flute and their a full caster?!

The "excuse" for making the Warlocks into Half-Spell casters was that, supposedly, this was going to fix their biggest difficulty. The very limited amount of Spell Slots between short rests. But the community has done the math and found that actually, if the Warlock takes short rests, not only does he have ALMOST the same amount of spell slots after all, but in One D&D these spell slots are divided into level 1, 2, 3, etc; while the 5e Warlock has them all at their maximum Spell Slots level. To top it off, at level 20, he has MORE spell slots than it's One D&D version.

And yes, I know. It's hard to make short rests optimal or used in a campaign. But WOTC can fix this. It just hasn't. Actually, the clear difference in advantages between short rests and long rests has INCREASED. Simply put, WOTC looks like has no idea what the fuck it's doing.

You know the best way to fix a caster that relies on short rests is make short rests better for everyone, most classes just get hp back so just making it so that key class features get some uses back(not necessarily all of them) would help a lot. Barb gets a rage, monk gets some ki points, sorcerer gets sorcery points, etc.

One D&D is good at one thing. Making us realize how good 5e is

I think that if they wanted to give the warlocks more spell slots they would have given them 1 or 2 more slots trough the levels, this is brutal. Maybe giving one more at level 6, so that in the end you have 5 instead of 4 would have been better to fix the problem of the few spell slots

If warlock was to be reworked to include more spells, I would just give them an extra 2 spell slots, and give them access to those spells as follows: lvl 1 gets the single spell slot. lvl 3 gets two slots. level 7 gets 3 slots. lvl 11 gets 4 spell slots. lvl 15 gets 5 spell slots. lvl 17 gets 6 spell slots.

I would also recant the change of mystic arcanums and give the wralock ones from their original progression. The rest of the warlock changes I am not too upset with.

Give me 3.5 warlock any day. That class in that version was awesome and I loved playing it. No spell slots, no daily limits, all innovations were at will and you could shape and change your eldritch blast into many, MANY things. You only has 12 invocations which would include blast shapes and effects (change the attack to being chained, reach, or a melee face stomp while the other can change it to cause things like sickened all the way to the scarey negative levels). It was such a simple, cool class back then.

The funniest part to me is that they made the Warlock worse, but actually made it _easier_ and _more_ tempting for martials to dip one or two levels of Bladelocke by making it untethered from any specific patron _and_ giving you a *choice* of the stat you use the weapon with.

Warlock is my favorite class to play in 5e and this is very hurtful for me, this changes are really bad. Takes away any minimal amount of trust i could still have in WoTC. Is very brave and good that successful 5e content creator like you is talking about these horrid changes. Keep up the good work!

I have to ask, is One DnD replacing DnD Beyond? Cuz dude, when I play dnd, its gonna be 5e and nothing else

I've yet to see any 6th edition update that makes things better flat out, Just mostly negatives with some sprinkles of possible, likely very situational, positives

You get technically 2 more invocations because one of the core invocations for every pact boons are now inside their respective cantrips. Those 2 free slots can be used to havr 2 mystic arcanums and be on par with full casters.

Not that I disagree with the power nerf point... but the Pact Cantrips all get the effect of an invocation at 5th level, in addition you can take Mystic Arcanum at 5th level now in order to pick up fireball if you really want it...
Personally I think they should give the Warlock "Arcane Recovery" on every shot rest, 1d10 hit die, and Lv 11 and 17 scaling features on the cantrips, the Pact of the Blade could even pick up a Weapon Mastery ability and +1/2/3 to hit and damage rolls, though I'm not exactly sure what to do with the Tome and Chain... or Talisman.
I like the Idea of the Warlock being able to be the Warrior Crossover for the Mage group mirroring the Paladin being the Priest Warrior and the Ranger being the Expert Warrior and I am perfectly happy with them being Half Casters

I actually love the idea of warlocks having the option to choose their spell casting ability. I may adopt that in my 5e games.

I think there are some videos out there that show that a lot of these “nerfs” mathematically work out to keep warlocks in the same place and dare I say improve the customization and quality of life of warlocks
