My mom was schizophrenic.
If you want to have kids being schizophrenic make sure you are receiving the proper care you need before, during and after having children.
Don't let your illness be your kids burden.

My Mom was terrifying....my childhood was traumatic. My younger sister also schizophrenic and fetal alcohol syndrome. She has been in some type of institutional setting since pre teen. She is now 56 years old and still very hard to treat. Heartbreaking.

As with any other mental illness treatment is so so important when it comes to family planning (and everything else). Of course you can be a great parent with schizophrenia, if you take care of it, are on meds, have a therapist and when you have an active psychosis are able to get treatment and communicate it to your children. Having no treatment whatsoever and even being unaware about ones own psychosis can potentially be very traumatising for children, depending on the kind of symptoms. I have severe depression and to be honest although I really really desperately want children, I will try out all treatment options before, even electroshock therapy if I have to, to get it under control. I want to be the best mom possible for my children and I dont think I can be while being severely depressed and suicidal.

I really do blame Schizophrenia itself for my father's behaviour growing up. It's not his fault, it's the how I choose to take it because he can be loving father one second and then yell at me and hurt my mother the next. As much as I love him and I'm sure he loves me, it won't change the fact that I cannot wait to go to college and leave this house. It's fearful and frustrating to live with someone so unpredictable despite taking medications

As long as you're aware of what your issues are and how to deal with them. Parenting is a whole nother issue. Millions of people have all kinds of undiagnosed psychotic disorders and are still parents. Now whether they are good parents, is a whole nother argument. It is up to the person to decide whether they want to have children or not.

To the person who asked, theres a channel called SBSK and theres a very petite lady with cheek piercings who has a red headed baby in the video with her and she has schizophrenia and discusses being a mom with it. I highly recommend everyone in the comments look up that channel and watch it ❤

My dad is bi-polar with psychotic tendencies. He got 12 children. He has always had bad episode growing up and a drinking problem. None of that ever caused him to be violent. And he was always good with children.

My grandfather had schizophrenia. His marriage with ny grandmother was very bad and he was abusive. He wasnt a father to my mother. Years later, he meets a woman and they said he was on meds and doing well. He wanted to meet us kids, i have an older sister and a twin. We were living in a different state and we got dropped off with him. Long story short, both him and his wife lied. He wasnt taking his medication. Ive never shared this story with anyone. He ended up beating me very badly. I was 5 and my older sister was ten. I barely remember much. My memory is like me watching it happen to someone else. I have flashes of it memories that a through teary eyes. Other than that, its like a movie that happened to someone else. My older sister called my parents and he ripped the phone cord out of the wall. A cousin came to us in the middle of the night and we crawled out the bedroom window. Im 32, i still refuse to ever speak to him the few times he tried over the years. He never apologized. He did recently ask my mom if he could meet my son, hes 14. I said absolutely not. My mom has struggled with the same illness. She was a great mother. We had some struggles but she is the best mom ever. Just sucks when she goes off her meds. She went off two years ago and refuses to go back on. I just pray she does. I love her. But she was a great mom! I love her more than anything. Just wish she didn't have the obsessions she does at times.

I have skitzoprnia and bipolar and i have a kid and i like to think am a great mom 😊. He is well aware of my mental health issues so he understands when sometimes he sees me having a full on conversation with myself. For the most part my medication works for me.

I think parents with mental illnesses who are actively addressing them and honest with their lives and kids are so much more functional and better parents than those denying any diagnoses because “everything’s fine!” Even when it’s obviously not. Awareness and conversation around these topics helps and with proper support I think these parents can be okay

My moms aunt was schizophrenic and her kids were severely messed up but that’s because she refused any sort of help or medications and wanted to be a single mom. She would drug them with Benadryl to keep them quiet even when they weren’t making noise and her sisters often came over to find the kids starving, sitting in diapers full of poop or just clearly hadn’t been bathed in a long time. What I think made her so much worse was that my great grandmother refused to acknowledge that her daughter could have something “wrong with her” and convinced her she was fine and to just ignore it. This is why mental health matters so much!

My grandmother has schizophrenia and unfortunately was not given proper treatment so my mum ended up in the care system. Thankfully she was fostered by an amazing lady who I also call my grandmother. Some people don’t end up so lucky. It’s all about the right education, care and treatment!

I know a lot of you had a terrible childhood because your parent was schizophrenic, but please remember that like all mental disorders, it affects people on a spectrum and in so many different ways. Schizophrenic people are not the only demographic which should not have children for the sake of having children, or even simply because you want them. Your baggage does not make you a poor person, rather the unwillingness or inability to work around it will. There are those who do put in the necessary work, though it’s also ok to decide you’d rather not!

My schizophrenic aunt is a great mother with a great husband who always shows up when she can’t. On the other hand, it’s not easy or possible for everybody and there’s WAY more to life than having kids.

Sorry but my cousin would not be able to be a good parent. We already have to watch her and help her daily with caring for a dog. Neither would any of the people in her group and none of their supporters encourage it either. We all talk about it, especially since it can be passed on.

I think the biggest objective is, do you feel comfortable enough with the huge chance of passing it along
