Unity vs Unreal Engine | Graphics Comparison

A comparison video between Unity's and Unreal Engine's post-processing and graphics!

I also tried explaining why Unreal Engine has "better" graphics by default. I went into its standard image effects being added since the creation of a level, and explained further why Unity does not look as good at start.

Don't forget to let us know what YOU think and feel about this topic! Do you think Unreal Engine has beautiful image effects? Do you think Unity will be able to take over UE4 with its post-processing stack in 5.6?

I hope you guys enjoy!

I met a Unity developer at GDC 2017 who said that anyone making a game in Unity should script their own shaders to give your game a better look.

the lack of built in post processing in unity is probably the reason we see more artistic styles in unity and more realistic styles in unreal.

Would really like to see a comparison video using the same assets in both engines.

Unreal and Unity both have "Un" and if we remove it, they become "real" and "Ity", and you mix them together it turns into "Reality"

The one you made for unity looked like a scene for The Last Of Us.

I too only use Unity, but I still don't like the grass and wind in Unity at least compare UE4

Unreal has better graphics than Unity. Unfortunately I think it is not that easy to "just make Unity look as good as Unreal". I mean the entire Unreal 4 engine has been built from ground up around the idea of making the most amazing, best looking real time rendering engine. This is what Unreal did in the past when it was still competing with Quake 3 engine, this is what they have 2 decades of experience doing: amazing looking real time render engines.

Unity on the other hand was created with the idea of "democratization" of game development. They build an engine that is easy to use, if you know a bit of code. The focus was for it to be extremely flexible and generic (the code), making easy to develop any sort of game.

This is why Unity will NOT get toe-to-toe with Unreal. Because Unreal was built ground up for doing what it does best: amazing graphics.

With that said, I think Unity will remain as the most popular game engine. Why? Because it easy to use, it is easy to get full functional games done. And this is what matters for 95% of indie developers. "What good is the graphics for if I can't get a game done on it?" But Unreal will remain being the preferred engine for mid-to-large size companies, because of the superior visual quality.

In UE4 graphics are not a problem at all neither they are in unity. But in unity, as you said, you need to implement more time in them. I personally like both engines but I think that, in terms of graphics, UE4 does a better job. I am not saying that unity's graphics are sh!t or something like that. I just think that you don't have to deal with the graphics in UE4 that much as you need in unity.

If you are a complete beginner to game development then post-processing is the least of your worries. Just go with Unity and learn how to make functional game play first. Programming is much easier in Unity and there are plenty of good tutorials online. You're not going to make GTA 6 as your first game anyway, so the slightly better graphics in UE shouldn't be a deciding factor.

I could just sit and watch a level build video... all day. This is amazing mate, amazing job! Subbed for future content.

From a non-developers viewpoint the unreal engine seems more appealing visually

Sykoo, Just don't stop <3
I'm a beginner at unity and your channel is helping me alot.
If it is possible, can you make more c# and scripting videos .
Keep up ! <3

They are actually working at redefining rendering from the blank slate. They will have a new renderer called Scriptable Render Pipeline. It will be open source (so everyone would improve it), will have some very good features from the start (fast, scattering model, SSS, proper GGX, volumetric and polygonal lighting and many more) and will have it's own material editor later (github commits heavily suggest about it). And this project is led by a graphics engineer who also worked on graphics in Frostbite 3. So, bright future ahead, eh?

Would be neat to see an updated version of this with focus on Unity 2019 and whatever version Unreal is on.

With a recent ambition in computer design, especially on a 3D scale, I'm really glad this channel was recommended to me. I'll keep tuned in for further videos.
