This gets to me because there is absolutely nothing wrong with Sympathy. In fact, Sympathy is the expression of empathy. Because you cannot have sincere sympathy without empathy. Her examples of sympathy are all examples of insincere sympathy. So her argument is a straw man.

I think a response can make something better if you are in the right mindset to leave it. I know it seems contradictory to be in both the right mindset to leave a spot and still on that spot but sometimes it requires a catalyst. When i didnt work because of my anxiety I didnt need the empathy from my parents being understanding and letting me wallow in my lack of movement. What i needed was what my friend gave me, an ultimatum. I feel you but you need to do this for your self worth. Get moving or be stuck where you are forever.

Some good points in there, but kinda short-changing sympathy. I'm an empath, but even so, I don't see sympathy as driving disconnection. More neutral. Sympathy is "support in the form of shared feelings or opinions" or more usually it's "pity". Even just carving out pity as the only aspect of sympathy, it's the right way to be in a lot of situations (if you have the choice). Empathy, "feeling with" someone, can turn one person who isn't capable into two people who aren't capable, which is usually fine, but sometimes the situation calls for one person who can get a thing done (on behalf of the person underwater, not feeling underwater *with* them). Sometimes the person is someone you can't "feel with", either because you don't have enough empathy in you to do so, or because it's too painful to feel what they feel, but with sympathy or pity, you can still try to do right by them. hth

Im not sure if anyone else knows about nature, but foxes are naturally very skiddish and bears are as well. The fact that these two beasts are able to break social distancing and embrace each other is a testament to the fact that they have something going on, whether a deal on sex or other benefits, such as an extensive animal drug or slave trade. Maybe thats how humans were able to domesticate animals to begin with. Their kin decided to pull a Benedict Arnold and betray everything they believed in only to get fed a few shitty pieces of food from humans. Hopefully those scraps werent genetically modified otherwise animal populations could be secretly evolving into mutants in order to exact their revenge for us enslaving their kind. Speaking of enslaving, I feel empathetic for all those slave dealing animals out there since i know exactly how hard it can be to actually put up with your enslaved furries.
