I’ll never forget my first time purging. Years ago I bought a charcoal face mask and used it the same night. The next day I had 5 huge pimples lol. I returned the charcoal face mask that following day and then that’s when the cashier told me that purging was completely normal when introducing new skincare products to your routine. I was like lol

I think the only product that made me purge was the first time I introduced a BHA into my routine. It didn't last too long. I feel like it came really inflamed one morning and then just as quickly it was gone. I recently introduced an azelaic acid and I love it. It works great for me

The one problem I have is when I started oil cleansing, I started getting bumps in my hairline. I have fortunately never had acne, so this was so surprising to me. I realized I needed to make sure I clean ALL the oil off my skin and hairline. The best product I have found is the Elf Salicylic Acid spot treatment. It comes in a roller ball dispenser, which I will apply to clean fingers and dot it on my bumps. This product is very inexpensive but effective, and cruelty free!

Hair looking fantastic today, Rob! I'm seriously thinking about creating a simple database where I can run different skincare scenarios based on what actives I want. Your videos are so helpful for this little project of mine. Thank you ☺️

Thank you for this! Now I understand that what I’m experiencing is a purge and not a breakout as well as how to deal with it 😅 I was so worried

Can you read my mind?!! 😊 I started the Paula's Choice 2% BHA lotion 2 weeks ago and my oliy skin is still massively purging - I feel like when I was a teenager but I'm 33. Thanks so much for the fantastic content ❤️- definetly going to check Geek & Gorgeous, it seems a no-b*** brand! xx

How do I difference irritation, reactivity and purging?

Niacinamide can cause purging too. Very often, it's treated as a superhero product that can do no wrong. In reality, it is not the case. It is essential that people identify the right percentages of active ingredients for their skin, which is just as important as identifying the right ingredients.

OMG! I remember my first trip to an aesthetician as a young teen. I only got the occasional breakout on my chin or forehead, but this aesthetician used highly advanced, active products and I was zit city for the next week. The pimple cover she gave me was grey and smelled like Silly Putty. Probably why I didn't date much in high school :-D

Great advice! I have definitely made the mistake of introducing too many new actives at once. I also agree with what you said about peptides. I find them very soothing on my tretinoin induced dry skin.

I started using Hyaluronic acid, Glycolic acid at night and Azelaic acid and Niacinamide in the morning all at once.My face already was filled with acne but using all the products in one day made my skin worse.I was so inpatient and wanted to try them that I didn’t think about the consequences.

1. Use Azelaic Acid
2. Introduce actives slowly
3. Not introduce more than one active ingredient at the same time
4. Introduce a peptide serum
5. Buy products according to your skin type
