I love Scotty’s honesty, just saying “it’s an old car and it works, don’t bother fixing certain stuff”. Most mechanics would jump at the chance of charging extra.

Look at the frame. If it makes with a Hammer clunk clunk, buy it.

If it makes crunch crunch, don't buy it.

What a Wiseman is Scotty. Good bless you

If you can actually see the engine and have enough room to get to everything relatively easily, you know it is an older vehicle and will cost less to work on.

I walked into a shop where they were working on a much newer pickup and they had the cab on the car lift above the pickup and the front fenders pulled off. I asked why and was told that they had to replace the head gaskets and in order to get to the top of the engine to work on it they would either have to pull the engine out of the vehicle, which was the harder option, or remove the cab and fenders.

That tells me that they really really do not want the average person to be able to work on their own vehicles so they have to bring it in to the dealer so they can keep their shop busy.

I love my 96 F150. It has almost 300k miles, the steering is absolutely terrifying, and the temp gauge doesn’t work, but it still runs perfectly. I only paid $3k for it a year ago.

Broke in 2023 means raising a family on less than $100k

I've been more of a car guy than a truck guy. My one exception was taking over payments of an old Ford Ranger from a cousin that grew up in my family. He was going into the Marines and just needed to get rid of the truck. It was a stick 4 banger. That thing was reliable and always easy to get fixed. It was a regular cab, which suited me fine back then. It got great gas mileage. Unfortunately, I could only go fast when going downhill. The baby engine tried. Nevertheless, it was great.

It probably could have lasted forever, and maybe I'd still be driving it if not for someone turning into me at an intersection. Because it was a cheap Ranger with a ton of miles, it was worth like a 6 pack. So it got salvaged. But I still have fond memories of that little guy. 🥹🥹🥹🥹

For years I've been towing a 6 to 8, 000 pound trailer with a 2011 .F250 all over the Midwest. The truck now has 350, 000 miles on it. Still has the original gas v8 and original transmission. only did required maintenance, oil changes, brake maintenance, transmission fluids and differential fluids and coolant fluids replacement's as required. Going for 400, 000, only uses about a qt. of oil every 3000 miles.

Most dealerships and auto repair shops rip people off all the time facts. I know a guy who’s truck was showing a code 401 for egr value bad. He took it in and they charged him over 150 dollars to replace it and that’s all they did even though the holes were plugged up bad. So after a couple weeks his truck had the same code back on. I took off his throttle body and cleaned it out real good unplugged the port holes cleaned his new egr valve out checked it to make sure it was working properly with a vacuum test put it all back together and it is doing just fine that was 3 months ago no more codes. They knew it was plugged up but because it was showing the 401 code for egr valve they just replaced it and sent him on his way.

Love my '20 Frontier. Bought brand new 2 years ago. It's a 4X2 but still handles well in the snow.

Bought a new Frontier extended cab in 1998. Drove it for 12 years with nothing but routine maintenance. Passed it on to my son and he drove it until last year with no major issues either. Stick shift and never had a clutch replaced. He sold it last year to a guy he knows for $500 and he's still driving it.

Wow a $6300 F250 with 280k miles is considered a good deal these days. Good lord times have changed.

The 2000-2004 Frontiers are highly desired in West Africa because they are so durable. They take a serious beating.

Recently bought ‘98 Chevy Z-71 ext. cab. for 3K. No rust, pulls like a train and comfy like a Cadillac. Very pleased! Had an ‘06 F-150 that was also a great truck.

How do I find an honest mechanic like Scotty. So many shops just want to sell you on a job you don’t need.
