This is a really great use for that scrap piece that isn't quite long enough for anything else. I like to work from one longer piece. I'll rabbet one corner then round over the opposite side on the router table. Then over to the drill press and set holes about 1" apart. Then just cut it to individual pieces using a cross cut sled. Easy way to batch out a dozen pretty quick. It's something no one ever sees, but they provide me so much satisfaction for some reason.

I never gave it a thought using a biscuit joiner. Nice very nice. You are the next Norm Abram. Thank you.

Hello Jon, when I did woodwork at school in the 50's in the UK the clips you have made were called 'buttons'.

Love these. Got this method from one of your earlier videos. Used these for attaching solid wood top to table frame which is a craft table for my 2 year old daughter. I used a plough plane for a continuous groove all around table apron and a rabbet plane to make long groove and cut each clip out separately then shaped with a rasp. Even though mainly use hand tools, still love your videos for ideas and then i just think, how could i do that with the tools i've got 👍 thanks for all you do

great idea! well done. You could use pocketholes but this is so much better and proffesional!

Thanks for the video! How strong are they? I could see picking the table up by the top and they snap in half. Do you consider grain direction when making these? Thanks!

Very well done bud!! Really from start to finish, this piece was very well planned and laid out. And like I said before, so many different ways to customize it. Until the next one, you bro., from the other half of the state, Dirty Jersey out!!!

I like to use z-fasteners for my tops but your's look much better and custom. Very cool.

Great video. Thanks! I am building a counter height square pedestal table. The pedestal is basically a cube with corbels in the bottom (for stability) and on the top (as a decorative detail). What would be the best way to attach the table top to the pedestal? This is the first time I make a table.

I would love to hear your take as to why you use this method as opposed to others (you mention z-clips for example.) Why not screw the top directly to the base? These clips are beautiful and a nice touch, but I feel there's some risk of breaking if you try to move the table by picking it up by the top. Thanks!

I'd like to see a video where you calculate wood movement and what measures to do to avoid cracking etc. I know this entails lots of factors like in different types of wood, different climatic environments, construction details, etc etc, and is in fact a whole separate field in craftsmanship woodworking, but still ...

Grain orientation on the clips is very important. I found out the hard way the first time I made these years ago and tried to batch them by notching a long piece with the grain and then chopping it into clips across the grain. Not a lot of strength in the tab of the clip if the grain is running parallel to the apron. They all promptly broke.

Jon, I have question. The wood clips attached along the long side of the table appear not to allow for wood movement across the grain of the top. The clips are right up against the apron and I can't tell if there is room between the end of the clip lip and the inside of the biscuit cut. Am I missing something or is this a correct observation? I'm sure climate would have something to do with it as well. Maybe this is not a problem for dry wood for inside use.

Jon. I have a question. Just yesterday, I finished assembling a pair if night stands i had been making for the last three weeks. Last thing I did was attach the top. I had originally thought about gluing and screwing it on but I had read about wood movement. And I understand it. But I'm sure that the size of the top also has alot to do with how much it will move. I ended up screwing it on with some pocket holes and some regular straight screws but no glue. Would glue have been ok for my 22" x 18" top? I think I prefer it being on there more securely. Please let me know what you think. And I truly enjoy your videos.

I looked back at your book case video but it doesn't show how you attached the top. I was hoping that would help.

Hi Jon,
Would it not be more efficient to run a length out and do the rebate, with a spindle or router table?

Then cut the blocks?

Cheers

Do you make extras when making these, and if so, do you have a large box of them? Silly question, sorry.
