How To Fix A Car Shift Linkage Cheap and Easy

If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, there's a good chance the collet has broken and fallen out. Most car companies don't sell the collet separately. They only sell the whole cable, which is expensive. In this video I show you how to fix a car shift linkage cheap and easy, building your own collet out of a shock absorber bushing and some washers. If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, watch this video and then go look at your car and see if you can fix your shift linkage the way I fixed mine. If it works, it costs less than $10 and will last a long, long time.

My mechanic was in the hospital when mine broke off. I told him I was going to take it to Express so they can fix it since he was in the hospital. He told me I better not dare go pay all those $100's+ of dollars when all he can do is put some zip ties on it for free. Well the next day after getting out the hospital... He came in zip tied it all up. Now it works fine.

Yesterday, I encountered a situation where a mechanic attempted to charge me an excessive amount for a repair that was not necessary. The issue was not with the shift cable, as the mechanic had claimed, but rather with the bushing. I was able to rectify the problem myself. Thanks to this video.

Brilliant video! I just had the same problem on my Ford Focus. Bought the parts, followed your instructions, and my shifter has never been as smooth! Also, that was a darn good That's What She Said joke.

Thanks!!!! I just came from the drug store and I couldn't get my van into gear. so I said I have a major transmission problem. I opened the hood and found the link connection off. So all I have to do is what you did. great work.

My bushing finally wore away and disappeared after 16 years.Took it to the auto shop where, for $70.00, they installed a new one from a GM repair kit.
It lasted for 20 minutes until I got to work.Blew off somewhere on the interstate.
Gonna take your approach and fix it myself.

Very helpful video, thank you man.. just had that issue in the middle of manhattan at 2 am, , toll guy ask for 400$ to take it to the shop, look I don’t know nothing about cars, everything I can do is to check oil level and fill up the tank, after wasting your video I learn something new on practice.. if I did.. anyone can do it.. thank you again, Nick, Brooklyn New York

this helps me a lot. i was driving on the highway in my 2001 ford focus 5 speed. and i shifted into 5th gear and felt the shifter basically break. then when i went to kick it in neutral or downshift it wouldn’t move. admittedly i’m new to driving a manual i thought that i blew a tranny. so i called my dad and we looked at it and determined it was a linkage under the car. now we just need to get the pary
