Mask the entire car, you wont see overspray on the exposed surface but you can feel it, also surrounding vehicles can get overspray. 400 grit is too coarse, 600 to 800 would be good. Mineral spirits is too harsh, use sprayaway glass cleaner (ammonia free) or alcohol. Might as well clear the headlights, but with final 800-1000 grit.

No need to repaint if the paint is still there. Use a slightly flexible rubber block for the sand paper, NOT your bare fingers. Use 800 first, then 1200, then 2000 and wet sand going lighter on sanding each time being very careful not to go through the paint. You don't have to remove all of the clear coat. Just feather out the rough edges and smoothing out the clear coat that is still there. Make sure there's no glossy shine. Lightly clean with lacquer thinner or acetone. Wipe with a tack cloth and spray while using a good resperator.
A dust and bug free inside environment is best. Good results is 95% prep before spraying to get a smooth glossy shine.

I've used 2k clear on several older vehicles. It surely qualifies as good enough. Trick I learned was heavier coats are better than light ones. Looks good from 20ft but most importantly stops the clear coat peel from spreading :)

I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing it this way. I used to work in a RV paint and body shop and we did it for customers from time to time. If the paint is in pretty good condition go for it. Your project turned out awesome!👍

I use the same clear. Best clear coat in a spray can for sure!

The most difficult part is the taping.

Just be careful with that 2K clear. Super dangerous stuff. Technically, you should have an forced air mask, but at a MINIMUM, you should be using that outdoors or in a VERY well ventilated area with a respirator and paint cartridges.

I do it the same way. The only thing that is an issue is the base coat can fade I bit. Still looks good enough. Great video.

The reason people dont do this is that the clear and base a bonded together when sprayed. Doing this means that the weak point is the base. Sure it works and it should last a while, but how long it lasts will be how good the bas coat is that you sprayed it to.

Ive debated doing this because all my vehicles have this problem. But eventually ill just respray the whole thing in a single stage paint with some hardener from tractor supply for $100. Car paint is insanely priced now adays. From the prep to labor to the actual paint cost. Ill go with a tractor paint lol.

I just came for the comments, lol. But to be fair, he did say it wasn’t the right way and just an experiment. So disclaimer there! 😊

If you have flaking peeling clear coat on your car. Use a regular clear scotch tape to remove most flakes. Just stick it on and rip. Best method I’ve found that does not damage base coat.

I like single stage, with multiple colors., it's a lot of work, but the paint doesn't peel, 🎉🎉 it's awesome.
