Sorry, we don't eat maggots or cockroaches. I just want to make it clear. The beetle larvae, or some worms that live in tree bark are nutritious, and people eat those. We also eat other herbivorous insects such as crickets and grasshoppers. NO maggots. NO cockroaches.

Im American living in Cambodia. Most of these are true. Except tuktuks are mostly for tourists. In towns other than Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, they're not that common at all.

And most cambodians actually don't eat bugs except for more elderly people who have an acquired taste for it from the Khmer rouge days. But a lot of Cambodians think it's gross actually. But if you venture into the more rural areas in the north they do eat bugs and even dog a lot. Interestingly, the cambodians from the towns or cities have their own prejudice against these kinds of people.

Also the most obvious one is yes, there's no McDonald's. I never even knew I liked McDonald's so much before I left America. Now I can't wait to go Thailand just to have it again lol. There's just diary queen, KFC, burger king, Carl's Jr, dominos, pizza hut, and papa John's here. Cambodians love pizza actually for some odd reason. Seems like you can get pizza just about everywhere here. So we have all the big American pizza chains.

Why do you mention only snakes, maggots, cockroaches, and crickets as the foods that Cambodians "enjoy"?? First, they don't eat cockroaches. Second, only the very poor sometimes eat snakes or crickets. Most Cambodians usually eat fish, beef, pork, chicken, duck.

Sad fact: Cambodia has had a hard time recovering from the horrors of the Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s that killed an estimated 2 million people. Its sad 😢😢😢😢
