The MG 4 is the BEST car I've driven all year!

This is the all-new MG4! Mat’s got his hands on this family-friendly EV, and he’s about to see if it can compete with class leaders such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born.

For starters, it looks great from the outside! Top-of-the-range models get a smart light bar around the back and a cool roof spoiler. What’s more, they also come with a black roof and blacked-out rear windows. There’s also a super cool front splitter up top, along with some smart daytime running lights. One thing’s for sure, this car looks much more expensive than it actually is!

The good news is, the good looks continue on the inside. There are two large separate infotainment and dial screens, and a smart two-spoke steering wheel. You’ll also find good-quality materials throughout the majority of the cabin. The infotainment system is ok, but it does also come with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay as standard.

There are two choices of batteries, with the range-topper being 61kWh. This then comes with a range of up to 281 miles, along with a 203hp motor. This car, and the entry-level, are both rear-wheel drive.

So what's the price? Well, it starts from just over £26,000! Think it sounds too good to be true? You’ll have to join Mat for this all-new review to see for yourself!

Got it wrong about the phone charging cable. The rubber mat lifts out and there is a slit from each hole to the edge, allowing you to slide the cable into the hole. Under the mat is a larger hole that the connector will pass through.. That way, when you replace the mat, you can still slide the cable to adjust length, but the connector cant drop through.

Having driven this car, I have to agree with Mat - it's a great car for the money! Comforatble, handles well, lots of gadgets and good build quality! Really good value for money compared to other EVs

My brother's just bought one. An absolute beauty. Holds the road like it's on rails and quick. Apparently there's a new high performance 440bhp variant out this year.

hopefully this kicks all the legacy manufactures to reduce the artificially inflated ev prices . id3, cupra born, corsa e. ect

MG not taking the piss with the price just because it's electric.
Very well done MG. And this is a nice looking car.

I recently bought an MG ZS EV (trophy) as I wanted an ev but didn’t want to pay through the nose for it. As someone that’s spent most of my life a brand snob, driving BMWs, Audis etc, I decided to bite the bullet and buy the MG.
I can honestly say it’s one of the nicest cars you can drive and value for money is fantastic. I’d also never go back to an ICE car now either. EV all the way!

MG are definitely upping their game, but I’m a long way from wanting one!

The MG looks pretty impressive overall. And it’s great to see someone focusing on a less “premium” (I mean by price range) segment of the market.

Totally agree! I took one for a test drive this afternoon and then placed an order straight away. I never drove an ev before and never wanted to (I love the sound of an engine) but this is good value and quick. Only issues -- plastic hubcaps, drivers display is too small and very basic, seat is uncomfortable after an hour and aircon really needs buttons as the ones on the infotainment are really small.

I just test drove one this week. The car amazed and disappointed in some ways. Here is my tldr, coming from driving a run down 2008 Golf 6 with the sad entry level engine and manual transmission

+ motor response and power delivery feels like going a century into the future coming from my old car. Daily drivers don't need more than this
+ good suspension setup regarding lateral forces. Felt sporty, precise and much better than expected
+ clean looks and intuitive ish controls all around
+ Luxuriously good ACC that makes traffic jams half as infuriating to deal with. Brakes to full stop (sometimes a bit late and harsh) and then accellerates super smoothly
+ In sports mode the steering is awesome and its great they allow you to mix sport steering with eco motor control

- handles bumps worse than my old near broken car with 210000km on it (noisy over potholes, tends to bounce and shake you around)
- squishy soft seats bound to wear out soon and for a tall person the bolstering meant for the neck or something is annoying around the shoulder
- no onboard nav. If android auto craps out like on our test drive you are screwed. No fancy charge stop route planning like VW and Tesla or Mercedes have either.
- The Lane keep assist is a proper menace on tight roads. If you get close to a lane marking it steers you on it and glues itself to it for a second before letting you drive again, or goes left and right like a ping pong ball on its own.
- If you make the car twice as good by disabling the lane keep assist and put the motor into eco to reach the claimed range and the steering in sport mode... your settings return to default when you enter your car next time.

8:41 if the hole was bigger, the cable would drop back to the bottom when you're not using it.
The bottom of that tray is probably removable so you can slip your cable through the side.

Its so great how well matt is able to objectify relative value. From posh cars to cars for the masses, he always values the car proportionately. Cudos!

Seen one today in car park, have to say, its very impressive... the styling, the interior. It's amazing@ This is what the Fiat Punto was in the 90's, revolutionary and affordable. Still need to test one and can't wait :)

I also reviewed the MG 4 and I can confirm, it's one of the best electric cars today!!

1100 miles on my MG4 so far. Can’t argue with much of Mat’s review.
Rapid charging is like the 0-60, faster than MG claim. I got from 22-80% on Ionity in 23 mins in my LR! Topped out at 142kW for quite a time.

Some software issues, no scheduled heating, remote instant heating not working whilst plugged in unless charging. Settings defaulting when car switched off, not remembering how you want to drive. Safety systems kicking in too eagerly.

Does ride and handle lovely though and is all day comfortable.

What a review Mat! Clearly MG has stepped their game up, but the fact that they haven't stepped the price up too is what will definitely make this a popular choice. Looking forward to seeing this one on the roads 😄

I've just spent 2 months in Thailand, various models of MG's are everywhere, some of the large sporty ones are really nice

I've got the MG 4 Excite 64 and a VW Polo GTi. I used to love my GTi so much but the MG is just so fantastic to drive that its usually my go to now if i have the choice. Great car.
