MG4 DRIVEN! Is this the game changing electric car we’ve all been waiting for? Electrifying

It's here! The all-new MG4 has finally landed in the UK and we've just put it through its paces. With a game-changing price, is the MG4 the real deal?

To many casual observers, MG is one of the least likely names to be leading the electric car revolution. Famed for its leaky but quintessentially British two-seater sports cars, its reinvention as an electric car brand still comes as a surprise to new buyers. But here we are, almost two decades after the brand was sold off to Chinese owners, MG is outselling big names like ŠKODA and Land Rover, and has gone from being a rank outsider in the business to being one of the hottest properties.

The MG4 is a five-seat hatchback made in China, where it’s called the Mulan. Interestingly though the styling and some of the engineering is done in the UK.

It’s priced between £25,995 for the 51kWh standard range model with up to 217 miles of WLTP ability, up to the £31,495 Trophy with a bigger 64kWh battery. Our test car - an SE with the big battery - can manage 281 miles on a full charge.

Join Nicki as she puts one of the first models in the UK to the test. Has MG set a new benchmark for affordable electric cars? Watch to find out.

€30, 000 _ €35, 000 here in Spain, wow, bugger off VW and Tesla. I don't need to go 0-60mph in 3 secs every time I get in a car. I just need to go from A to B in comfort without having my eyeballs taken out on price. Gonna be a massive hit all over the UK and Europe 👍👍👍👍

It’s nice to see MG throwing yet another curve ball into the EV mix. It’s showing me that the price of EV’s are coming down and putting confidence in me purchasing one when my car is up for renewal in 2025.

Great review, wouldn't even consider an ID3 over this, really impressive car.

Just love these videos so professional and fun, I do not understand the subscriber numbers at all. Please keep up the great work! Also thanks for giving a great description of the interior, I rely on those as for some reason I can't remember the interior at all...must have been distracted!

Can see this being a big hit, excellent value, OK range for most people.

This makes me think of a pointed nose ev6 with the rear end of a Toyota B4Z. I think this is going to be a great seller for MG, for the price the spec and warranty it seems to be showing the more expensive brands how it should be done. The MG fan base seems to be growing and I can see why.

You should re-visit the MG4. The MY2024 (from 1 July 2024) got a new software that fixed pretty much any issue with adas. It also keep in memory the one pedal setting, one pedal works with battery at 100%, models with sat-nav got route planning with recharge stop calculation (tesla-like). Also the roof of the interior is clear grey, that make the interior a lot less dark and all interior lights got replaced with led ones. I don't know if in UK is available, but top spec model with the standard power train got added to the line-up. So is 49kw/h standard, 49kw/h luxury (as is called the top spec in EU), 64kw/h standard, 64 kw/h luxury, 77kw/h trophy and 64kw/h x-power.
MG pumped out so many quality of life improvement with the new MY, is unbelivable.

Can’t wait for the MG4 with Twin motors and 400HP🔥

Not mentioned Vehicle to Load charging capable - useful if blackouts do come this winter (to keep the freezer working) - and rear left for the charging port (matching Tesla) - means not clogging up the parking at an open (to all EVs) Tesla charging station - and no dirty looks from Tesla drivers for parking unconventionally and blocking 2 charging bays - as I do with my Kona… 🤨

Thank you for mentioning the rear wiper. Really bugs me that it seems to be disappearing from new cars

Very good review and the only one I've seen to mention the MG4 can tow a trailer and the towing capacity but unfortunately you missed an opportunity ! ! ! You could have mentioned that it is the cheapest and smallest EV coming to the UK that can actually tow and none of its rivals can, (unless you consider the other more expensive MG models) making it a huge selling point for MG. It would make an excellent camping/touring car with a small box trailer or micro caravan and for those who like the water you could tow a jet ski or possibly a small sailing boat, power boat or RIB inflatable ! I don't see this car depreciating in value much as it has so much value to offer at such a low price of £28, 500 with a WLTP of 281 miles ! (Less if towing a boat ⛵ lol) !

It will be interesting to see how it compares with the Ora Funky Cat. The thing that puts me off the MG is the anti-corrosion warranty is only for a year, then the time and expense of annual body inspections to extend it a year at a time. With VW and Cupra cars the brands have confidence to guarantee them for twelve years straight off the bat. Looks a pretty dark interior and not sure about the two spoke steering wheel, maybe the dual motor next year will have a three spoke sports steering wheel. Possibly the facelift in a few years time will come with a rear wiper.

I think I'll wait until they release one with a rear wash wipe, which is almost inevitable. I notice that Hyundai/KIA couldn't resist calls for one, what chance MG?
There is a point at which cost cutting really is ridiculous, especially when they get so, so much right.
I honestly think this may be the first car to challenge what I was originally aiming to get, the Ioniq 5. Not that I wanted to spend all that money, but that there was nothing on the market that would do what I wanted. The closest was the Niro - e, but "fast charging" on the LR version of that is still significantly longer than on this MG. Yeah, the performance of the Ioniq and Niro e are significantly better, but that is not essential, towing, LR, fast(ish) charging, these are essentials for me, the fact that it looks pretty neat is just a bonus.
Well done MG.

Great review and very informative. This car will hopefully shake-up the EV market in the UK. Well done MG!
I understand that the smaller battery is the more durable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) type (rather than the bigger packs Lithium Ion), so likes 100% charging. For only occasional longer trips that may be the one I'd go for.
Makes you realise what the ID3 could have been. If the MG4 has a few scratchy plastics and an infotainment system that actually works, then given the price there is no contest.
Also, as battery packs form the single biggest cost of an EV, it makes you wonder where the established car makers are sourcing their batteries from if not from the Chinese suppliers?

I think you are right, that this car will appeal to many potential ID.3 and Born customers. I am one them: I had my eyes set on the ID.3 but I am strongly considering the MG4. I am confident that it will sell very well and is going to shake up the European compact class car market. The only downside is that they currently don't offer a battery in the 77kWh range like VW.

Absolutely great value and seems to be a genuinely good car. Not sure I would go for it myself instead of my Niro EV but if my wish is to see EVs be available for the masses then I have got to be happy with the price. This is going to shake the market and three cheers to that.

The center console is the same for LHD and RHD models, that's why the gear selector is quite far to reach for RHD models.

Ev6 in the front? If you meant "sporty looking" Prius i would agree. A bit weird looking, but not in a bad way. The big opening in the front and the edgy lines going from the front all the way to the back makes it look pretty ok. The window lines are nice too. Inside is pretty clean.
