New MG4 EV full review - the cheapest 300 mile electric family car

New MG4 EV full review - the cheapest 300 mile electric family car. But is it any good? Jonny - like a lot of electric car enthusiasts - has been keen to see whether this new ground-up MG can credibly take the fight to the VW ID.3, Cupra Born and veterans like Renault's Zoe and Nissan Leaf.

Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

This is a near 300 mile EV that starts at £25,995 (minus any gov grants). Two battery sizes are available - 64kWh and 51kWh (the latter has a WLTP of 218 miles), with 7.9 and 7.7 0-62 times respectively. MG are throwing thew gauntlet down to Kia and Hyundai with a similar 7-year warranty, but they are styling the MG in a way which could make the historic brand desirable once again beyond the bargain hunters.

Not particularly interested in MG but watched from start to finish. Jonny is hands down the best car reviewer on YouTube or any medium for that matter 👌🏽

I run an MG5 as a taxi 73000 miles in 20 months fault free still same range. Brake pads worn about 10% from new. Customers absulutly love it.

As an MG Rover Mechanic. I love the brand owning many cars from this brand last being the MG Maestro Turbo. Really good to see the brand bouncing back 👌 Alan Partridge 🤣

We've had two Leaf's a MG ZS EV and a Tesla Model 3. We currently have the Model 3 and the ZS EV.
With the exception of handling the MG is the best EV we've had. Yes, the Tesla is fast and handles well, but, for what it is and how much it cost the MG is an absolutely cracking EV. Ours is 2.5 years old and has been faultless and brilliantly built, better built than the Model 3.

The ZS will.be replaced by the MG4, legacy manufacturers need to keep a close eye on MG.

one of the best car reviews ever..this was a journey. From nanny's clock to brand snobbery to eating your own words..this was great.

Great video Johnny, you’re so right about the MG! We’ve had an MG5 for the last 6 months or so, and I really can’t fault it. I’m a petrol head at heart too, and was initially reluctant but this is honestly one of the best cars in terms of value, drive-ability and spec I’ve ever owned.

I think we lost you for a moment there, Jonny. Full on '80s flashback going on. Love it!
I absolutely would drive one of these. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a Tesla Model S, but there's no way I'm forking out £700 a month. I'm very much looking forward to test driving an MG4!

I bought a 2nd hand ZSEV expecting some oddities and little issues. Non! It’s 2 years old, 20K, drive superbly, saves us £100+ a month in fuel, has lots of tech and the kids love the glass roof. The thing I added was a spare wheel and tint to the rear glass. Funnily enough we had a opportunity to hire a ID4 on hols and we were all pleased to be back in the ZSEV after, funny software in the VW and far more plasticity surfaces than a VW £50k should have. I a big fan now of SAIC (MG) 👍

Really good review, great to see cars like this that Hyundai used to offer. 5 years on from our Ioniq, this offers twice the range, faster acceleration and twice the charging speed for the same money. What's not to like?

Hi Jonny, thanks for the presentation. I bought an ex demo MG5 Exclusive last October - my previous vehicle was a 2004 Range Rover with LPG conversion - lovely vehicle but began costing lots of money at each successive MOT. The MG5 has, so far proved to be faultless - the air conditioning is the best that I've experienced in any vehicle that I've owned in the past. Its completely unobtrusive in operation. I generally drive in 'economy' mode and max 'regen' mode. Recently, in the hot weather. it was returning 4.6 miles per kwh - I pay 21p per kWh on economy 7 so circa 4.7 pence per mile. The 12 month service cost £70 and that included cleaning inside and out and took about an hour. Have been thoroughly impressed with the car.

Never thought i would ever say i like MG cars. But i have been driving an MG5 EV since June as a company vehicle. I have covered 6k miles without any issues and i would even consider owning one as a my own private vehicle. I'm impressed with MGs so far

Another honest, unbiased review Jonny. I like the finer details you get into, the level of finish within the boot area. No one else would pick up on these things. Top man!

I been keeping my eye on this since they announced it. For 28k for the mid trim with decent range and 7 years warranty. You can’t go wrong. Is nice looking as well. I’m certainly will buy one of these.

This is one of the best reviews of an ev or even a new car in general. I am going to have to seriously rethink what the brand actually means to me because I think sometimes we are nearly brainwashed into thinking certain brands mean More than they actually do mean

Shame Kia aren't still doing what they were doing 4-5 years ago. Still making great cars but the prices now are just as astronomical as everyone else.
MG4 & Dacia look to be on a roll, good luck to em.

Absolutely considering an MG. As a traditional country dweller, I think the EV5 is the one I'd have.
Absolutely not a badge snob, but will always buy the vehicle that suits what I need.

More over, why the hell hasn't Jonny been put on the telly box with a motoring show??? His presentation style is absolutely on point, a joy to watch and listen to.

24:26 I picked up a new style MG5 here in France this week…. It’s so good! No new car glitches, good panel fit, no rattles etc. The touch screen navigation and entertainment screen is very responsive. I made a point of not reading the user manual - everything is just evident - no surprises. And it goes well - the long range luxury version has all the toys and is certainly fast enough. Just back from the DIY store with 2.4m lengths of wood no problem!

I have a Polestar, and I like the centre console. But I'm old, so it doesn't count. And this car here, is really significant and exciting. It's a huge step up in value for EV's. It's the first time an EV with "full" functionality has come out with a price hugely undercutting its obvious competition. The warranty is incredible. The 64 kWh is interesting. Are theses all the same across the manufacturers? Is it all CATL? I have a 69 kWh Polestar, which first came out with 64 kWh. And there are all the Korean 64 kWh too.
