The MG4 is one of the most exciting electric cars on sale. But can it beat the VW ID.3?

Our MG4 test car is in Trophy specification and comes with a 260-mile range between charges. Prices for the MG start from £26,000 for the smaller battery model with its 218-mile range, making it one of the most compelling long-range EVs currently on sale. Our top-spec Trophy model comes in at £31,500.

The similarly sized ID.3 also has 260-mile range but costs from £36,000. But price aside, are we finally at a time when MG is going to beat VW? In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott tests both cars back-to-back on UK roads, assessing their boot space, interior practicality, technology, equipment, charging and driving dynamics. I wish reviewers would read the manual before reviewing their cars. The MG4 (which I ordered as soon as I'd returned from the test drive!) has steering wheel-mounted climate controls (once you've one-time programmed the shortcut button on the wheel spoke). Then you simply adjust the heating (temperature up/down, fan up/down) without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. Same with the sound system controls (on the other spoke). So one of the main criticisms of the MG in this piece was in fact erroneous.

Not only is the MG £6k cheaper but it looks so much better than the VW, it will appeal to a younger customer because it looks sportier too ! but if I could afford a new electric car I would definitely go for the MG4 and I'm 71.

You can lower the volume of the indicators on the MG4 in settings.

The fact that the MG is only behind the VW on the finest details just goes to show how far they have come - not to mention £6k cheaper too!

There are 2 programmable buttons on the steering wheel (L+R) you don't have to go into the info screen, one can program climate and say regen can then be adjusted from the steering wheel.

i think MG4 its just much better... Clean new platform + very modern battery + cooler design, no discussion who's the winner IMO!

Interesting review. BUT, if you are going to criticise the menu system on the MG4's infotainment screen, you MUST mention the two programmable buttons on the steering wheel so you can access parts of the menu with one click. You don't (as far as I am aware) get that on the ID3.

Staggering how far the Chinese have come to provide relatively inspiring and good value EVs, but to be fair the VW ID range is (in my opinion) dreadfully bland where the MG is a distinctive and original design. At least the British connection with the Allegro quartile steering wheel is maintained 😮

You can create shortcuts for climate control and regen in favorite buttons on the steering wheel.

Pity you don't seem to know how to read the manual or do any research before you present, turn the volume down if you think the indicators are too loud, although there are many who cannot hear very well so may be those would like them "loud", also the climate controls etc can be asigned to the toggle buttons on the steering wheel, guess what you don't have to faf about on the screen.

As a German I like the MG way better than the VW. Well, I don't like the VW design and philosophy for a long time... I agree on the bad display controls, but the ID.3's solution isn't any better. It's sensitive touch controls even without backlights!

It helps if you get more to grips with the cars before reviewing. For example all the moans for settings on the MG4 are on the steering wheel. That's why cars have multifunction steering wheels so you don't have to use the touch screen while driving as that would be
