The "Sunday Poem". Today, of the greatest nonsensical poems written in English, probably even the most famous nonsense poem ever written: "Jabberwocky" (1871) by Lewis Carroll

Since this poem is about monsters and killing monsters, it is definitely not for kids. It definitely isn't.

Tune in every Sunday for a new poetry reading. Or weekdays, Monday to Saturday to my "a chapter a day" readings of public domain classics.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

I knew your voice would be perfect for this poem. I was about to suggest it to you, but I see you already did it. Nice! :)

To the writer, all poems are special.

I love it. Did you know that The Muppets did a version of this poem. My favourite Muppet character Rowlf the dog was in it alongside a character named Scooter.

The poem is about facing fears as a child. The first nonsense section is full of fear. It turns out to be ridiculously simple to kill his long time foe. The final nonsense section completely changes colour when fear is removed. Try again. Dump the beard, Be a kindly father guiding his son. There will always be more fears to face. One at a time.

One more thing. To Galumph. Say the word 5 times and you will understand it’s childlike quality. Father will be proud.

Thanks for reading these beautiful poems to us, I love your voice and enjoyed it very much! I think you deserve more attention for that great work of yours. I don't know if you read German poems too but I would love to hear "Der Panther-Rainer Maria Rilke" read by you.
XOXO inkblt

The first time you say wabe, you pronounce it as wade.
