The CGI of Ryuk hasn't aged very well since this movie came out, but I still give props to it for trying its best. I only read the first chapter of the manga when I saw this movie, but it had so much background information and supporting details that I had no trouble following it.

Well we all didn’t need the 2017 live action version (except for the having William defoe as ryuk, that was the only great thing and definitely a brush of genius because it worked so well 🤩) because Japan beat America to it, and did it better.
