There's a really cool detail in the voicework here. Both Light and L's audible thoughts come out somewhat strained at the moment they hit the tennis ball. That brief moment of physical exertion makes their thoughts sound more aggressive, though only for a moment.

And that is exactly how Kira lost in the end.

Near wasn't enough to defeat him, he was too defensive; he studied, watched and even went as far as faking the Death Note, all very defensive maneuvers.

But when Mello heard about that, he did what Near couldn't (or wouldn't) do: he attacked. He thought about the possibility of Near being fooled, and decided that the only way to make sure was kidnapping Tanaka. When he did that, when *he* attacked, X-Kira panicked and fucked everything up for Light.

Mello's plan was all attack, it failed and he died.
Near's plan was going to be all defense, he would have failed and died in the warehouse.

But together, their plans had both attack and defense. And that is how Kira lost.

I just realised Light winning this tennis match kinda foreshadows how he thinks he **wins** against L by killing him.
