We're telling you, the road was literally one meter wide and people waited for well over a minute😅

It's standard practice in Germany too.

As a former New Yorker, this would be a tough thing to wait out.

I was 6-7 meters away from the pedestrian lane when a truck spotted me, he stopped and waited for me to cross. I felt embarrassed that I'm making him wait, so I ran fast and cross. Whole new level of respect for the citizen of Japan.

I saw 2 foreigner break this rules in japan kyoto last month n they almost got hit by a teksi. So red light mean no crossing at all coz thats is the time for car to use the road.

I'll even wait 2 minutes for a light if I have to and I'm in Denmark. There's usually a reason it's red, especially during rush hour.

Thank you for not breaking the rules. Its a pleasure to respect other people and their culture/habits. Hope you had a lovely visit.

I do this in Japan too even if it's clear that no cars are around for miles mainly because of the broken windows theory. You can't go to another country and enjoy their social order and safety then actively sow seeds of chaos.

So far, that's been the last thing I learned about Japan while in Japan: To wait for the green light, even when there's no traffic at all.
You don't want to be the rule-breaking foreigner that stands out in the crowd.

More German than Germans are 😂 (because one can get fined here in Germany for jaywalking & the people will stare at one for jaywalking & the people can get very unfriendly towards jaywalkers)

Many Japanese don't wait if it's not a busy street, especially if no one is looking or if they are riding on a bicycle. I'd say jaywalking is about as common as in most european countries. Driving through a red light though is super common here, never been to a country where so many drivers ignore red lights.

Lived in Tokyo for Five years in the late 70s/early 80s. I would have stayed there until my death of old age if asked. A fascinating culture and people.
