Sharing some rules I’ve learnt from my Japan trips! Do not do these things when you go to Japan:

1. Do not open your tax free bags until you leave Japan
2. Do not wear shoes in changing rooms
3. Do not ignore the escalator rules in Japan

Hope these tips are helpful! Follow for part 2 and more Japan tips 💕

So many videos about what not to do in Japan. It would be refreshing to have as many videos about what to definitely do in Japan.

For rule # 3, only Osaka and Kobe observe the right-side of the escalator; Kyoto follows everyone else on standing on the left side.

Question for #1: Prior to the airport, if you open and discard the tax free/duty bags before customs, how would they know you haven’t paid taxes on them? For those who haven’t been to Japan, yes you can get those bags at some stores outside of the airport when you purchase goods.

Lately this escalator rule is changing though. I live in Nagoya so it may be different in other regions but they now encourage you to stand on both sides and not to walk on escalator to avoid accidents I suppose.

the fact that the Osaka/Tokyo contrary rivalry extends all the way to escalator etiquette is hilarious.

If you plan ongoing to a restaurant, a bar. Or something you seen on social media. Always make sure to see if they need a reservation first.

Osaka and kyoto train system on google maps dont have as much info as tokyo line such as station numbers, and signage in general seems to be less. I got lost alot compared to tokyo.

You know, I kind of like the idea of a designated side to stand or walk on. It would probably make navigating the mall easier.

Do not throw trash or litter anywhere, there are no public dustbins 😊, rather dustbins only found within the convenience store.

I love japan. With that being said, after bringing my kids there 3 times in the last 5 years, I find myself mentally exhausted constantly worrying about us breaking any rules or stand out from the crowd. It's a bit suffocating to be honest. For our next vacation, we are going to switch it up to somewhere more relaxing.

Cover as much as you can on the top and wear short skirt in Japan is considered decent. If you wear tank top and showing mostly the top and cover mostly your legs. They can tell you are a tourist for sure.

Number 4: Oh well... guess we need a "don't buy that, but this instead" series 😅

Are you sure about the escalator custom in Kyoto? I think it is an exception in Kansai, as the people stand on the left.

I shipped my souvenirs home. I didn’t bother with customs. I was just in Osaka. If you can’t groove with how you need to move in a crowd, I saw 5 tourists completely jam up a door for a train causing some people to miss it. It’s very annoying.
