Actually, when I was in an elevator with an old Japanese woman she was the one that started talking to me in Japanese😂but we had a nice conversation😊

Don't strike up conversations with random strangers, put things back where your find them, and don't smoke in public. I'm fine with all of these

Reading the comments made me so happy. Because Japanese people are not robots and you can relax that they are normal people like in every country, but in most polite way possible. Love them.

Tbf if you’re a foreigner in Japan, especially American or at least are fluent in English… it’s pretty likely the reverse will happen. Japanese people frequently like to practice their English on foreigners! Quite wholesome honestly! 😭😂 so while you shouldn’t just go up to anyone and take up conversation, the ones who are comfortable will most definitely come to you! (I’ve head that quite a lot of students do this to practice for their English classes haha!!) it’s so sweet 😭✨

By this logic, I understand the US rules to be:
- Always talk to people you don't know when they have no way out of the conversation.
- Bring the shopping basket home with you.
- Smoke in the densest place you can to spread the joy to as many others as possible.

Been to Japan 3 times. I’ve frequently had conversations initiated by locals in all 3 visits. Everyone’s individual experience is different.

When I went to Japan, most people spoke English and they were very nice. My dad was trying to figure out the train schedules but he was struggling, then, this kind man with a massive smile on his face showed my dad how the trains work and he even PAYED for our tickets. “Embarrassed”

Istg though, that man was so sweet. I hope he’s doing well

Talking in an elevator is literally fine ! Stop letting influencers tell you what to do ! Take it with a grain of salt .

Greek here, we speak with everyone, Greeks smoke everywhere and we have no rules. I think that is why everyone Loves Greece.

We were actually approached by Japanese people out of curiosity. They'd practice their english, and were pleased to know we could also speak what basic Japanese we have been practicing with Duolingo. On an elevator no less. Maybe dont blanket everyone under one umbrella?

American: "good morning"
Japanese: "STOP VIOLATING MY PERSONAL SPACE!"

My Japanese lady is not awkward or introverted. She's sociable, well to a point anyway. She's very sweet, hardworking, polite, and can be a corker. From my experiences no matter the culture if people are respectful towards each other, even across cultures, people will see the intent despite it looking like a rude thing in a culture, when it really is not the intention. Yes, there are going to jerks, but that is cross culturally unfortunately.

Honestly a lot of YouTubers like this do lists of what not to do in Japan but most are completely wrong. Its easy in the end follow one golden rule when in Rome do as the Romans do. Follow that one rule and itll never let you down. If u wanna do ur own thing then dont get hurt when u get in trouble or stand out

I had so many people help me in Japan when I was lost. I always was respectful and said 'excuse me' before approaching them. But they were not uncomfortable at all.

I’ve asked them questions and they have been very polite and helpful

I was in Japan recently and people would very much violate personal space. People at crossings would smack into me and on trains people smush together.

I love how everyone respects the rules. This is why Japan looks and stays clean! Everyone is very respectful and nice. One of the reason why I love Asian people.
