This is a scene from Bojack horseman where he tries to shoot the Secretariat scene. The director gives him the setup for the scene and shoots it.
He was supposed to cry but didn't, at least not till afterwards when the directors words hit too close to home.

This is me :'(

Bojack horseman belongs to Netflix I do not own the property. This is for general use only.

That cry fucking slays me. Something about it just crushes my heart each time I watch this scene.

My first time watching the series, it was the exact moment that I realized this show is something special and emotionally powerful.

"No, I knew" They just showed what a great character Kelsey was with three simple words.

"No I knew" Three words, that meant so much it made him cry.
The validation he always wanted and thought he didn't deserve.

Kelsey knew this would get her in trouble, but she went with it anyway. I honestly believe Kelsey could've been a great friend to Bojack but their relationship was cut off for the same reason Herb never forgave Bojack.

"Didn't know I had it in me, did you ?"
"No... I knew."

WHY IS AN ANIMATED SHOW ABOUT A TALKING HORSE SO HEARTBREAKING?!

I may not like BoJack as a person, but that transition into crying? That was Very real. That broke my heart a little.

Kelsey was the one good person in bojacks life that wasn't a hypocrite or an idiot. She saw what bonack could be and tried her hardest to get him there she wasn't in the show for long. Her scenes always seemed to hit bojack the hardest

As of season 3, this is the only time we've seen him cry

'No. I knew.' That line is brilliantly delivered by Maria Bamford.

I think people slightly misunderstand what Kelsey meant when she say "I knew". She was validating Bojacks acting skills yes, but she already knew that when he did the audition. She was saying she knew that the feelings she described "Secretariat" having was exactly how Bojack felt which is why she also seems sympathetic to him, she knows hes broken.

Kelsey is my favourite secondary character. She's inbetween trying to make actualy good films, not just popular films, but at the same time is so bitter and detached, plus he daughter... And still somewhere deep inside of her, she somehow trusted Bojack a few times, in her own, Kelsey way.

Also like that Bojack has such a respect for her, and is one of the few women he didnt try to seduce at all. And something tells me that there won't be closure between them, at least not in the form of a movie the get to do together. I hope, but Bojack doesnt seem that kind of show.

Tho it is hilarious how Todd makes her so surreally happy.

I remember when I first saw this scene. That crying in the end is so genius. It ripped my soul out. I love this show. It's truly an art.

This was so hard hitting... BoJack has been through so much shit but he has never broken down into tears like that. I suppose being told that you’re broken beyond repair would do that to you... He might’ve done a lot of shitty things but he deserves redemption because he clearly regrets everything.

He cried because she was the approving mother figure he was always searching for.

The show seriously fucks my emotions god damn.

I think what makes the show have such incredibly close-to-home hitting moments are those like this. Putting aside the stardom and such, it's moments like this that make the show feel surprisingly real. When a person accomplishes something that they thought nobody else believed in them, having come from a lifetime of shortened and belittled expectations that eventually follows them into their adulthood, and then realizing that some people actually have enough kindness in them to have never doubted them from the start. What started as a moment to feel like showing others up and proving them wrong, turns into having lived up to how highly others had thought of them all along. In that moment, it can be realized how low one's expectations had been of themselves for so long, it's impossible not to feel something from it.

It’s really interesting to see how this ties into an analysis video of Free Churro. Throughout the entire monologue episode, one of the main themes is Bojack’s need to be seen. He was never seen by his family and got comfort from watching television, thus making him want to force the world to see him one day. Even when he was finally on TV and able to be seen, his mother still refused to see him (both in real life AND on TV). All Bojack wanted was to be seen. She finally has a moment where she says, “I see you”. Just for Bojack to realize that she was just realizing that she was in the ICU. In this episode, I think Bojack cries because he is finally seen for once. She sees Bojack. All Bojack has ever wanted is to be seen.

They don't cut back to Bojack's face until the director says they've got it. i've just realised that this makes us see the scene through Bojack's eyes, making it one of the most immersive scenes i've seen in a while. I bet we all had the required expression when we watched the scene, because i know i've had.

That goddamn crying scene man..

When people ask you how you are you reply everything's fine. But when you're alone you just can't control those tears and the worst, you don't even know what exactly they are for
