He connected alcohol with a pleasant feeling of hugging his mom. No wonder he keeps going back.

The saddest part is that probably THIS is the only good memory of his childhood.

"When wasn't the first time I drank?"

did anyone else realize that after he drank, the music cleared and made sense? that definitely means something

The music that’s stuck on that loop and only breaks when he drinks. Heart breaking.

The best thing Beatrice ever did was make sure holly hock got away from all of this.

“Mostly you’re drowning. She understood that too. And she recognized that I understood it. And Dad. All three of us were drowning and we didn’t know how to save each other but there was an understanding that we were all drowning together”

Jesus the writing in the show is so genius. The music record sounds so distorted and dark but once he took a swig of vodka the music became more clear and happy... But what’s even more depressing is seeing Bojack cuddle up to his mom because he wishes his reality was that happy and loving

He looks to be seven or eight years old and he didn’t even cough on a gulp of straight vodka.

There’s a lot to unpack there...

He places the bottle back in the same spot so no one will notice. Usually a kid would screw up the first time they misbehave, but he knew how to not be caught so it’s likely that wasn’t the first time he’s done that.

The music becomes clearer as the vodka starts to affect him. It’s less distorted, it makes more sense...it’s normal. He really can’t make sense of things or be happy with a clear head, and he’s associating inebriation with happiness.

And that smile...he looked happy. A child, starting to get drunk, in the arms of his drunk and asleep mother. The only comfort he really knew was in the her arms when she wasn’t capable of being emotionally abusive to him, when she was quiet and just holding him.

And most of all, he seemed to be happy to belong, that in some way he was more like them and part of a group rather than an outsider. He was happy to drink and just fall asleep, because just for the moment his family was all doing the same thing and they weren’t hurting eachother.

Thirty seconds and it establishes just how badly child bojack is handling all this. It’s unhealthy and it’s sad, but it’s the only way he can cope and be happy. Tragic is an understatement

Look at the familiarity Bojack approaches the bottle with. He checks to make sure he won’t be caught and ensures no evidence by placing the bottle back the exact same way and replacing the lid. This is a custom.

He just wanted to connect with his parents.

“Until suddenly you realize you can swim.”

The music on the phonograph is the same song that plays in free churro but in a loop/distorted. It’s so heartbreaking this might be the only happy moment he’s had with his parents. He just wanted to know what it’s like to be loved, but like that record playing it’s never gonna be right.

It was really interesting how there are flashbacks to Bojack's life that showed him being sorta "pressured" into drinking in various situations. It gave us the impression that he fell into drinking because of all that pressure, and each flashback showed a younger and younger version of Bojack. Then this last flashback has no pressure whatsoever.

This time, no one convinced or forced him to drink, we just see a small child effortlessly drink the vodka making it clear that he's done this before. Seeing how he smiles while snuggling up to his unconscious mother and letting the alcohol settle in... It truly is heartbreaking.

That’s the song that plays in the funeral monologue episode when Bojack remembers his mom dancing and his dad watching her. When he remembers he can swim.

The fact that the music starts to sound normal shows that bojack only drinks it to feel normal and safe around his parents

what makes this even more heartbreaking is even bojack knows his parents “hated” him he still loves them and want their love and affection, that’s why he came near his mom to be hugged by her.

Literally burst into tears when this scene came on. BoJack's life has been nothing but a series of heart ache ever since he was born. The 2nd part is probably going to tear us down.
