I'm trying to build a NAS using repurposed extra parts I have. Going to use 5 hard drives.
I guess it doesn't matter that the MOBO & CPU are 2-3 years old & CPU is just a 2 core?
Would I need to reformat any hard drives with OS previously installed on them?
Can I use an optical drive on the NAS?
Do I need an OS other than FreeNAS installed and where exactly do I install the FreeNAS?
I'm a novice type, thanks for the help.
Great Video!

Good video, it was easy to follow for me to set up Freenas (after finding a usb (Silcon-Power) that finally worked for booting). Everything worked well except I had an issue trying to access the Win share. I was getting 'windows cannot access' - no permission error. I realized I had to create a user for it and change the Pool user from root to my new user name for it to work.

Hey. Love this video, but could you please do a short video about Smart Tests and Scrubs and about how to use them best to insure safe data. Thanks.

Very good video as I just setup Freenas 11.2 on my old computer. I did not know how to link the hard drive to windows 10. This video cleared that up for me! I have a wd mycloud box ex2100 and I hate it. It always needs to be rebooted just to work properly. Remote access is not secure at all. I can ramble on about it. My goal is to use freenas and learn how to set everything up on it both to be used securely local and remotely. Your other video mentioned you use VPN. How would that be set up? If I set up static IP on the freenas, will the router know to only give freenas that static IP or could it accidentally lease that IP out to another computer if I decide to have freenas reboot here and there? I have not looked at At&t's router setup, but wonder if I could set up a dhcp reservation for freenas. I am new to all this so I have many questions. Best, Jay

If you are using an SSD for your FreeNAS install can you also use that drive for a cache drive?

I can't get to the server. I specified a static IP, but when I go to that IP in chrome, I get "This site can't be reached" What do I do?

Once you setup the share you go directly to type the I.P of the share in windows. No idea how to get the IP of the share. I did know how to map the drive but it did not work until I restarted the freenas and PC.
