Another great video, Tom! We always appreciate your support.

Thanks Tom! Your quick video showed me where I had made a significant but easily missed mistake where the remote freenas host had not got a matching remote rsync module name. DOH! That is now fixed and my Rsync is going again. Marvellous!

I generally use rsync to copy vast amounts of data RELIABLY. You can mount an SMB share to your laptop, open a terminal, and rsync to copy from your laptop to the server using the mounted location as the destination. No config needed on the server. Or enable ssh on freenas and use a destination in the same format you would for the scp command

A use case that comes to mind is setting up a mirror for your favorite distros' repositories.

Excellent work. I used a lot of time to get this working, so here are some tips to those who are struggling out there:
1. The Rsynch module have to have the same name on source as rsynch task on destination.
2. -And this may not be very intuitive: It looks like the name of the rsync task/module have to start with a lowercase letter. -So make the name as simple as possible :-) -It may also be some issues with special characters, but anyway, check your name if it doesn't work.

With the deprecation of the rsync service coming to TrueNas Scale, I'd like to see an update on how to properly set up rsync from TrueNas to a non-TrueNas linux system, such as OMV or any linux server. I've been having a heck of a time trying to gen keys from TrueNas's WebUI. Thanks.

Great video. Working for me but only files are being synched over not directories/folders within a dataset.

This was helpful.

I have ran into problems with trying to move files from a DAS to TrueNAS and I wanted to use rsync to do it. Ran into permission issues.

This seems to be TrueNAS to TrueNAS though but I found it helpful.

Thanks for your videos of FreeNAS always very interesting to follow your channel. Just a side note rsync between FreeNAS boxes becomes very handy when you want to do a backup to another server and then shut it down after the process is finished. This becomes much more difficult when using FreeNAS own replication functionality since you cannot as easily find out when this has finished. But of cause if both is on 24/7 it is not a big deal.

You are also a long time user of syncthing for file backup and sync, which of these two softwares do you prefer? Is rsync in some way any better than syncthing or they can be used interchangeably?

excellent. What about how to support sync or backup to a Box account? Can't figure that one out.

Rsync as software (not FreeNAS service) has methods to login using user and password. And probably you can setup it using auxiliary options

Hi Tom, Great video like always! Would love you hear your opinion. Im currently running a Synology NAS which im running in to its limitations (max 4 drivers etc) so im planning to build a FreeNAS machine . The Syno will go to my parents house as an offsite backup solution. Would you suggest using Rsync for the FreeNAS to Syno tool? And how would you connect that securely? I run a pfSense router so a VPN would be a valid option.

Is there any Gui for windows ? (rsync task)

Great content Tom! In practice I tried using this but rsync running under FreeNAS is too slow. For a couple of GB you'll be fine but try and copy 100GB. Sending ZFS snapshots always uses full bandwidth but rsync under freenas for me does not go beyond 15MB/s give or take (maybe there is throttling involved on the process?). There are numerous threads on different forums with no answer. If I want to sync only a few folders I use robocopy /MIR. Uses full bandwidth and always works

As far as I know, Open Media Vault (OMV) is a branch of FreeNAS based on Debian linux. How do the two compare? Are there any good reasons to choose one over the other?

Tom, you need a better web cam. It's sort of getting gruesome seeing it blurry, low detail quality, and low frame rate.

Tom, can you try the Linux to TrueNAS 12 version of this. I have a couple of FreeNAS 11.3 versions and rsync with modules work fine. The same exact setup on a fresh TrueNAS isn't working. Not sure why.
