"Strange" doesn't seem to adequately describe some of the addictive behaviors profiled on this series. 'Dangerous', even 'life-threatening', come much closer. Each half-hour episode features two adults who resort to extreme compulsions in an effort to soothe their emotional demons. Some of the addictions explored include sleeping with a turned-on blow dryer, eating bathroom cleanser, eating half a roll of toilet paper a day, extreme bodybuilding, and thumb sucking.

Very cool how Dr. Wagner stuck to the topics that he was able to address, such as the physical complications and problems that can arise from these addictions and while he mentioned underlying psychological issues, he didn't demean them or attempt to diagnose them. Awesome Doctor.

Paraphilia, pica, and other mental health conditions are so difficult for our patients who deal with them, and they deserve the utmost empathy when we treat them. I really appreciate the respectful way you handled these Dr Wagner!

I have a deep appreciation for the way doctors like yourself treat these patients who struggle with addiction of any form. Usually when we strive to understand the reasons why they do something they shouldn't, it is easier to not be judgemental but also we can treat them accordingly in a dignified manner... I think.

I've always been sceptical about the bleach episode. If it's not scripted for shock value, wouldn't her skin, clothes, fabrics, loofahs, etc be discolored from, oh I don't know, constantly being loaded with bleach?

Chloride bleach is 6.25% chlorine. That’s half the strength that my family would use for our water distribution when we owned the local neighborhood water company. The chlorine required for treatment, at least back when we would have to use it, 12.5%, is strong enough to easily eat through thick basic clothing. So no, ingesting Chlorox, even touching it, in an undiluted state, is not a good idea. Not to mention that her ultra-sterilization is causing her harm as well.

What does chlorine do to cells? Essentially, in a nutshell, it punctures cellular membranes to just pop them like balloons. Nasty to bacteria and other germs, but just as nasty to us.

Huge problem with infinite tolerance and acceptance is that many people who have mental problems behind their uncanny habits might not get diagnosed.

"Oh she likes to collect dead birds in her apartment. Lil odd but who I'm to judge"
What if that habit is result of some childhood trauma that would require psychological aid?

This show ain’t my cup of tea, I’ll admit that. Some things are just too strange for my liking. Freaky eaters, great show involving extremely unhealthy eating habits, that’s a great show to react to.

I honestly sympathize with Riley. Being an adult is really tough and sometimes you just want to escape reality.

"I wanna know what her poop looks like"
Dr. Wagner 2022. It's a funny quote, but a stool sample would be very interesting and (obviously) medically important.

Dr Wagner, That first issue is not technically an addiction. The symptoms manifest as an addiction but from the perspective of a clinical psychologist and having watched this episode in length in order to properly assess the situation as best as i can, i would have to say that this individual suffers from a form of agoraphobia. The fear that is gripping him is related to traumas he has experienced in previous romantic relationships and it has caused him to attach himself to an object that is incapable of emotionally harming him. This is actually common in clinical psychology and it is most prominent in individuals who are incredibly passive and allow others to walk all over them. People who are afraid of confrontation and refuse to acknowledge the red flags in their partners during a "courting process". This specific agoraphobic individual would benefit most from what we call "willful exposure therapy" a gradual and willing exposure to the thing which they fear, either the ex who traumatized him the most, or an individual who can mentally emulate the ex, or it is his own internal character defects that his subconscious continues to try and make aware to him yet he continues to ignore it. Either way, an individual of this nature would be incredibly difficult to properly treat because the fear they have is immense and their level of cowardice is beyond reproach. Essentially, they view themselves as incredibly weak and helpless and this is why they fear the confrontation. These individuals also often shy away from most of lifes challenges and tend to die alone, broke unhappy and unfulfilled. It is truly a sad existence and this is why i try to help these individuals more than most clinicians will. They live in a version of "hell on earth" and see themselves as incapable of breaking out of this prison, they also see their obsession with the object as both fulfilling and a solution to their problem. So convincing them of the psychological harm of sexual relationships and emotional attachment to objects is difficult. I hope you read this and i hope this helps fill in the gaps for you. I know as a clinician yourself, you must be curious about this man. God knows i was when i first viewed your video.

This was different from you Doc, still great how you talked about the complications that could arise from these addictions. I would be open to watching more like this. Keep up the awesome work. 👍

2:00 Ah, so you've never had someone with a daffy duck situation? Unfortunate, that'd be a hell of a story to tell.
