This was a lesson for n00bs specifically. Also, 52 Week Guitar Player is CLOSED until mid-September. We just closed in June so now is a super early time to get on the waiting list . We'll only be accepting 100 new students (see related video "How Good is 52 Week Guitar Player Actually" for more info)

Since he didn’t say it, I feel obligated to. Obviously, this isn’t the only scale shape you should learn. It’s just one of the most useful.

I remember discovering this scale when I was 12 years old. My teacher only taught me the minor pentatonic at that time, but I quickly discovered that adding a few notes to it sounds good. Then I started expanding this pattern, eventually discovering other scale patterns on the fretboard, many of which I still use

Hey that's the aeolian scale! I learned that in one of your other videos.

As a trumpet player and pianist, I can confirm my piano also looks like that

Basically, you can learn to improv with any mode from one scale pattern, because each mode is just a major scale starting on a different note. This is actually a good intro to modes for new guitarists, because they can initially focus on hearing the distinct qualities of each scale while not worrying about a new shape.

I have really started to understand the fretboard much better over the past couple of weeks! I feel like I'm really improving.

This guy always makes me full-belly laugh. It's so entertaining that I learn concepts that I hadn't considered yet.

Just realized part of the opening solo of Fade to Black is basically that scale played straight

I taught my friend that’s begging about modes and how to find relative scales using the circle of fifths. He just memorized one scale shape on the whole fretboard and transposes it depending on what key he’s in. It’s a pretty great trick and it’s how I learned scales

It is C-Ionain (Major); also, it is D-Dorian, E-Phrygian, F-Lydian, G-Mixolydian, A-Aeolian, and B-Locrian. The modes, the reason CAGED functions as it does.
The point is, it all depends on where we start and what we accent that determines what we might want to name it. There are multiple options, as you can read.

Play C/8- F/8- A/8 instead and get rid of the F/13- A/13. This gives you 1 more note and the pattern is symmetrical.
I learned this after 7 months of playing. It's not hard and when you learn the rest like this, it makes more sense. 18 notes per string x 7, and you have the whole neck.

I can confirm as a trumpet player and a guitarist yes

You can memorize chord shapes on piano too! Knowing the notes is helpful regardless though
