How to Backup one Synology NAS to Another Synology for an Offsite backup using HyperBackup

Показать описание
The easiest way to create an offsite backup is to deploy a separate Synology as an offsite backup and use it as a Hyper Backup destination. Synology makes this process incredibly easy by installing Hyper Backup Server and using the built in DDNS server.

This tutorial covers how to use a remote Synology NAS as a Hyper Backup destination in order to create an offsite backup. This is even accessible for home users by purchasing a cheap J series NAS and leaving it at a friends house! This is very important to do to save your data from fire, water or theft.

your tutorials are so helpful! So much easier and clearer than going through all the synology documentation.

Note: YOU MUST HAVER Hyper Backup Vault installed on the TARGET Drive or you will NOT BE ABLE to connect to the target. Only took 24 hours to figure that out. Just trying to save someone else. Thanks for the vid Rex....

This is actually the best howto for this purpose. Worked like a Charm and even with remote site backup. Thank you very much.

Great summaries! Suggestion to make some money and really help users long term. You’ve taken significant time to understand Synology. The main problem is users set up their equipment then when a catastrophic failure happens to their computer or Nas 1 year later, they scramble to figure out what procedures are needed to institute a recovery. Why not take your knowledge and build instruction templates for these different videos. This will allow users to enter their specific configuration information and passwords and document exactly how they set up their device for hyper or other applications. Then have an instruction template that explains exactly how to restore data during a recovery. Put your business contact information on it and ask for a donation. They can print the information out, put it in a binder next to their Nas, and never have to worry about what to do when they start a recovery or want to reconfigure their NAS. THANKS AGAIN!

I’m unable to successfully login to my backup nas using correct credentials. Possibly permission issue. Any ideas ?

How safe is the ddns on the remote Nas? And if someone exploits the remote Nas can they make their way back to your local Nas?

Hello SpaceRex, is this still the best way to secure offsite NAS in 2023 please?

I had a older Synology (a DS213) in storage when I was inspired by this video to do an offsite backup. I had a “static” backup on SD card elsewhere, but a dynamic backup like this is much better. Since I had recently put a new HD in my main Synology (DS718+) so that I would be running one new drive, I had the pulled drive to use in the DS213, so no initial cost to do this. When I get the remote NAS to its ultimate destination and running, I will get a second drive for the remote NAS. The initial in-LAN backup went smooth as glass, now I just have to do the remote phase. It would be helpful if a video were made on the various options to accomplish a remote backup besides DDNS, e.g. a VPN, Direct Connect, etc.

Thanks for this video - very helpful - allowed me to use two old Synology devices I had doing nothing and will save me >$2000 per year in cloud costs!

A good idea is to have an offline backup too. Tape is great for that. Great video.

If I use my old NAS as target to back up, I get "version incompatibility problem" message. My target NAS is a DS213 so it has an old DSM (6.2.4)and my origin NAS is a DS220+ (DSM 7.2.1). How is het possible to back up to an old NAS if they have different DSM?
