As an IT guy, I like the way He speaks how great everyhing is ... without actually having any idea of those technologies.

If I had a dollar for every time he said "Synology" I'd have enough to buy one

I'll do a quick calculation: Sinology and 6 hard drives cost around $ 1500. One month of Apple Cloud costs $ 10. At the price of Sinology I would have more than 10 years of Apple cloud.
If anything happens to the Sinology hardware it would be my problem. And statistically in ten years something will definitely go wrong.
If anything happens to Apple's servers it's an Apple problem that would be solved without me even realizing it.
I believe that a solution like Sinology (or any other) is suitable only for those who develop huge volumes of work, in the order of tens or hundreds of terabytes, not for ordinary people for whom 2 terabytes are more than enough.

Hate this kind of hard sell! One important factor not addressed is if your NAS burns down with your home or office you are stuffed! At least offline cloud services like Apples iCloud provide security against this with multiple redundancies. Did not hear this in the ad!

Hi Robert, I liked everything you had to say about synology, but I feel you never explained how this could be the replacement for iCloud ?

Cheapest one I found on Amazon was 228. I pay 1.00 a month for iCloud backup, 12.00 a year. I can backup for 19 years for price of this box 😂

This NAS is 816.00 dollars from Office Max. Include a modest amount of hard drives and that puts you at an equivalent of 10 years of ICloud storage at 2 TBs. 120 a year for 2 TBs really isn’t that bad. I’m sure it makes a great NAS, but the pitch that it makes a good IPhone backup system? Not at all.

These things are $1000. The one he’s showing is $1600. The lowest I’ve seen is $600. The 2tb iCloud plan is $10/mo. That means even at the very lowest synology would take 5 years to pay for itself and is more likely only to pay for itself after 10+ years. And with the way tech advances who even knows if this would be 1. Safe or 2. Effective in that kind of time frame.
Unless this product gets under the $500 mark and preferably under the $400 mark it is useless for the average consumer. Maybe good for business, but the regular Joe Schmo? Fogittabout it

Apple lost all my iCloud pictures from before 2018. I called, I asked, I supplied, they just went "oops" and didnt care a bit. I'm so glad I have a backup on my NAS.

You pay for the electricity the backup server consumes. That is some cost.

I bought one of these in 2007 or so. It’s a server with a bunch of capabilities that I don’t think most consumers would want to use. There is maintenance overhead that I doubt most folks would want to deal with. But if you like UNIX and being a sys admin, it’s great. I bet there are a l of people out there who would be happy to give one away for free. I would have loved having one in high school.

BTW, I think it a good idea to assume everything you backup to the commercial clouds will be stolen. At a minimum the government will have access to it and probably many criminals and foreign countries. That’s just common sense. Synology is more secure in that regard, but has other problems/costs.

Even with all of your positive talk about Synology I’m not finding a single use case where anyone would want it
If you’re a consumer and have an iPhone and MacBook, however simple Synology is, it’s always simpler to just pay a couple of dollars a month for iCloud rather than pay a huge upfront cost for hardware.
And if you’re a business that needs that much storage (eg. Video production) you probably already have IT knowledge on how to create a custom server

I actually own an older Synology NAS and have been very happy with it. However, I don’t think it eliminates the need for cloud or offsite backup. What happens if, G_d forbid, something happens to your home and both your computer and NAS are no longer available? Experts say you need at least three copies of valuable data and one must be off-site.

I love mine, it also handles my home security cameras, Mac and windows backups, iPhone backups etc.

Don't care that it's an ad, I learned something new about NAS and what they do! Too expensive for my liking though, I prefer SSDs for my own storage solutions. I edit video for my travels and I need a lot of space!!!

Good sales pitch, but I came here thinking you'd show how to backup an iPhone to a Synology NAS, other than photos and files.

I think I’m gonna unsub. The channel went from interesting content about apple to just talking about rumors and ads. I was hoping that the core of this would be talking about something like “use a NAS to make editing ProRes from your iPhone 13 Pro easier, but instead I got halfway through the video and it was still, rather deceptively, in the sponsor spot just hyping the product.

First video you've ever done that I dislike. I don't come to TAC to watch a 9-minute long infomercial.

Been working in IT for 20+ years. The only drives I have ever had failling on me have all come from WD. And I am still rocking a few DiamondMax from the ancient Maxtor without sweat! I also own two synology boxes and again WD RED are useless crap, had to replace 4 of them already. I replaced them with Toshiba drives and so far they have been painless. With regards to icloud vs NAS, and even though I own 2 synology and a few other branded NASes, I cannot disagree more. Icloud is simply unbeatable for price to usability ratio to TCO. As others mentioned you pay the equivalent for 10Y of storage ceteris paribus. The thing is in 10Y Apple will likely upgrade your service and resolve your issues hassle free whereas with a NAS it will most defiantly fail not to mention downgraded performance over time

Great Ad for Synology. I get the part where I need to backup my Iphone but there is nothing in this video about how to do that on a Synology.
