Learn How to make fantastic animations with my full course

This video looks at the AI animation software Cascadeur. I've been working with it for a couple of weeks and really enjoyed the experience and feel that this could well be the future of the way we animate characters for games and films. let me know what you think.

"I don't want ai to be the artist, I want ai to help the artist."

- Grant Abbit 2023

I agree 100%.

"I don't want ai to be the artist I want ai to help the artist" we must protect this man at all costs.

I agree 100%, AI should be a workflow booster and not a copyright infringing generator

If there is any beauty in AI becoming capable of anything it is that artists can choose to spend their time doing exactly what they want in their workflows.

I have followed this tool since beta and it is truly a wonderful tool and makes the animation and rigging workflow so much faster. One big thing to note is that it's AI assisted, not generative. It helps position the rig, but you still need to know the fundamentals and how to time your scene. Love the video Grant! Thanks for sharing.

We don't want AI to be the artists/animators but sadly a lot of companies want that :)

Your comment about, "I want AI to assist the artist, not replace them" is dead on. Too many of these people using AI to "assist their art" but are making things well beyond their own capabilities but still taking all the credit for the work. It's obnoxious. This definitely feels like it hits the sweet spot and tweening has been a thing for 2d animators for a long time. Let me be in control and help clean up what I'm doing.

I was a bit disheartened and skeptical at first, considering the title, but it feels like this is the type of tool I was hoping more people would develop with AI in mind. Where AI is assisting the artist, rather than taking over for the artist. I'm no animator, but this may be something worth looking into, as I've wanted to get into it.

I'm pretty sure the AI part of Cascadeur is quite "embellished" (marketed as such because of the AI craze), it's mostly if not only physics based. But it's still very cool. And yes obviously if you want good results you have to be good at animation, so to anyone that is serious about animating, you should definitely learn it the "proper" way first.

I like what Cascadeur is doing with AI, because it's physics based interpolation, not a 1:1 replacement for animators.

It's also been in development for many, many years. Long before this whole AI craze was a thing.

And some of the games it's been used for have some amazing animations. Vector 1&2, the Shadow Fight series. All great games.

When this software came out (and all the lovely cherry-picked demos), the owner of the studio I do freelance for announced that he was intending to lay off most of the animation staff now that "the computer can do all the animation". It took several meetings and hands-on demonstrations to prove that animators were not only still needed, but that Cascadeur was like a pencil, it's a tool that the artist uses, not the artist itself. His next announcement was that deadlines would get shortened as the computer was now doing most of the work. More meetings.
I enjoy using Cascadeur on a base posing level from time to time, but I always have to go back in for all the fine details to give the character personality and end up re-animating some of the base work and this usually means the same scene takes a little longer to complete. The software is helpful, and as it gets better, will do more, but still not able to replace the artist (yet).

0:43 You single handedly spoke for the entirety of artists. Love to hear that Grant.

Animator here. What this is doing is filling in between keyframes. The hardest part of animation is controlling what's happening in this space. I have had a quick look at the programme and haven't used it enough yet to make any real comment. From that I will say that setting the key frames in this programme would be slower than the one I use. What is speeding the process up in this programme is the AI filling the in between frames as I stated earlier because its doing the physics for you. What it can not do is predict physics for a heavy weapon or a light weapon as in how the animation should look and 'feel' and change pace. You can turn off the physics feature, Which is good.

The more specificity and control you take away from yourself, the less opportunities you have to grow and master your craft. And the real power of animation doesn't lie in the keyframes, its in the specificity of the timing.
Love the tutorials tho, cheers ✌

It’s a great tool, that could give so many animators the ability to start an independent studio, an produce their own ideas.

As a solo game dev, working on an open world game, I will definitely be incorporating this tool in my pipeline. Seems very user friendly and intuitive.(I find blender's UI a nightmare).
Thanks for the vid Grant, very well explained.!

Your beginning ideas on how AI should help artists is exactly how I feel, well said.

I’ve been using Cascadeur for about 6 months. I know it’s helping with so many things but it feels like its the just way animating a character should be. Btw - The assistive hands is exclusive to pro and that’s pretty awesome. Also, Someone also made a round trip addon for Blender!
