The “I’m already hooked” and then the reel starting again makes a perfect loop that shows what being a drug addict is like 😂

For those that don't know...

It's areca nut (Also some times called betel nut.) from the betel palm (Areca catechu) wrapped in a betel leaf, which comes from Piper betle, a different plant than where the areca/betel nut is from.

It's not like coffee, it contains a substance called arecoline, which acts like and is related to nicotine.
It also contain arecaidine, guvacine, isoguvacine and guvacoline.

Arecaidine is a Gamma-Amino-Butyric-Acid (GABA) reuptake inhibitor.

Guvacine is another GABA reuptake inhibitor as is guvacoline and isoguvacine is a GABA A receptor agonist.

The calcium hydroxide (Lime, white powder.) helps the absorption of these chemicals better, especially the arecoline.
It also hydrolyses arecoline into arecaidine and guvacoline into guvacine.

The lime is not needed to make it go red but long-term use of lime is bad for the teeth and arena nut is carcinogenic and causes similar problems to chewing tobacco.

Nicotine in experiments has been shown to be more addictive than Heroin and as arecoline is related to and acts like nicotine, (So much so they can replace each other if you're experiencing withdrawal for one.) then it probably is South East Asia's most addictive drug.

The way its eaten, it's eaten the same way in the Northeastern part of India, but with wet lime. There are four types in which betel nut can be eaten. Fresh. Dried. Boiled with lime and dried. Fermented in water.

Lime gives a zing. Tobacco makes you dizzy. Lethal combo.

The pepper leaf hits hard and the betel nut tastes better when chewed fresh. Add some chewing tobacco to it and you’re running on 5 cups or coffee per hit.

The thing I love about betel is that if you read any western sources on it’s referred to as a mild stimulant. Then you look at the number of daily users, the centuries of usage, and the clear heath issues (tooth decay, oral and esophageal cancers) people accept as part of the equation. A massive % of the human population in the eastern equatorial region use this “mild, slightly addictive stimulant “. I’ve always felt that the most addictive substances are the subtle ones cultures remain legally available (caffeine, sugar, nicotine, alcohol)
