Tried it a few times, it’s not bad. Gives you a good buzz like smoking a cigarette for the first time/ in a long time

The lime is also needed to increase the
pH around 10. This is required to oxidize some of the substances in the Areca nut, without which will not produce a stimulant effect. The leaf of the Betel vine is pretty much just a container and flavoring. The leaf is actually of the species Piper Betle which is in the Piperaceae family. This is the same family is where we get Peppercorns and a few other spices.

Most of the commenters are confusing addictive and withdrawal.
2 majorly different things. For example i will use my own experiences. While my painkiller addiction had the worst withdrawal, even after 20+ years once in a great while a thought (maybe an urge) to use crack enters my thoughts. I experienced zero withdrawal symptoms when i stopped using it though. I must also say that i still drink coffee, and smoke cigarettes. I have tried many many many times to quit smoking, just cant do it. I have never been addicted to benzodiazapines but the withdrawal from those and alcohol are the only 2 that can kill a person. So my conclusion in relevance to this thread is that nicotine is the most addictive substance and opiates have the worst withdrawals.

It's called "binlang" in Taiwan, and taxi drivers love it because it stimulates them and keep them awake.

In my language and my Island, we call that pugua (English is Betelnut) and we do chew it with the lime (in short for lime stone) and that leaf that you had, we call it Påpulu (i think) and it is addictive and if you chew it for years, your teeth goes yellow and brown. And if you are wondering we are called Chamorro and to be specific, i am from the CNMI or known as The Northern Marianas Islands and im from the Island Saipan.

Yo I know that neighborhood. That's where I live! You were in Banaue Ifugao. I recognize that abandoned looking house in the background. I know that man who demonstrated it to you, he's my uncle's best friend.

The lime affects the pH causing a chemical reaction that makes the psychoactive substance more bioavailable

A plant called Khat is chewed for similar stimulation purposes in Yemen and Somalia

The lime is there to freebase the alkaloid. Otherwise it would not go into your bloodstream. I tried this stuff in Thailand. Makes me very calm and slow. Others tell me it speeds them up.

In the place I live in, Betelnut is one of the most common things, I see my grandpa and his friends chewin these everyday at a certain time depending on his mood, if he's in a good mood he'll have 1 and chew it for 20 mins, when he's just having a average and boring day he has 1 and chews it for 15 mins, spits it out and grabs another one and chew it for 15 mins, when he's in a bad mood, he chews 1 for 10 mins, spits it out and grab another one and chew for another 10 mins, spits it out and grabs a 3rd one and does the same thing, he's been doin it for years and I'll tell yall rn for those who read this far, it ruins your teeth, my grandpa now has yellow and dark orange teeth, he's still the most handsome grandpa you can ever have this guy is my best friend and a half dude, but people pls don't do this, the only reason I don't rlly stop him from doing it everyday is cus Ik how much Stress he's had since his Older brother passed away recently, ever since he's been depressed and hasn't acted the same and it makes me sad, on August 7th, me and him are goin to South Korea where we'll meet my parents who have been gone since last year summer, when I told him he seemed excited but I knew he was feeling sad, so I told him that in the future if I ever get successful and meet him again, I'll pay him any amount of money he wishes, and I hope this happens one day, cus he looked so happy for that one moment. I almost cried because it's been a couple months since he last smiled, I hope you enjoyed reading that, but seriously people, don't do what my grandpa does, he only does it and I let him do it to get rid of some of the pain he endures, thank you for reading and have a great life....

In India you get a sweet paan which is a flavored paan with rose petals, coconut powder, papaya candy etc... full of flavor. Hardened users use tobacco with paan. That is an acquired thing. Not for beginers.

Oh my, these bring back the memory of my late mother whos a daily consumer of these. She had the betel planted at the back of our house, picked n uses them freshly along with some (a very specific brand) of tobacco, grinded limestone etc, at least once a day or else she won't be able to sleep 😂;
And yeah, it's admittedly addictive by her; and today it's hard to find anyone consuming these even amongst the elders - and that's how watching this vid really bring back those memories of her. Thank you;
