The weird thing about RAM is that you can find slower kits at higher prices. Some people get tricked by that thinking that if it's more expensive, then it must have more performance.

64GB is gonna be my personal minimum. I like doing heavy modding of games and slight graphic work and video editing.

But i always say "sorry" when Jason says "DONT BUY BAD RAM".
Its like when the Police driving behind you, you feel guilty even if you did nothign wrong.

I have 192gb of DDR5 and I do a lot of gaming.
The reason my ram is so high is I also work in game development at home and depending on what I am doing I am using well into the 150gb+ ram range

while spending more on a gpu instead of ram is certainly the way to go on game-centric builds, "over-spending" on ram isn't a bad idea either because any memory that isn't used for running applications is used by your operating system as filesystem cache. what this means is that if you spring for a really big ram kit (say 96gb), and your game and whatever background apps you're running only needs 16 or maybe even 32gb of ram to operate, the "unused" portion of your memory is used as a dynamic filesystem cache so that any file read from your ssd (which is about 100x slower than your system ram) is kept stored in that section of ram so when it's needed again (say you re-load the level or game texture or any part of a game really), it will load it from ram (WAY FASTER) instead of your ssd. My desktop has had 128gb of ram in it for the past couple of generations (because I do a lot of graphics and av stuff, not just because I play games), but I do find that it actually boosts game loading speeds. - another trick i've found is that if I know i'm going to play a big game for hours at a time, I'll run a steam file integrity check (which loads all the game data into ram (as much as possible) before I start, and performance is wildly improved without resorting to something like a ram disk (which doesn't allow less frequently used items in cache to dynamically expire gracefully wasting memory). This is especially nice for games that have lots of loading screens but it's mostly loading in similar datasets (for me that's largely been stuff like starfield, borderlands 3, tiny tina's wonderland, and stuff like that that still features loading screens) - it reduces loading times dramatically.

I think this might be the best tech info channel on YouTube. Clear, concise, succinct.

I know most of this already but I wanted to leave a comment saying how well translated this video is for newer builders. Great video, all the info you could need to know is included!

I just love the intros: STOP BUYING BAD RAM! Jason, you're my go to guy for all things components, man. I have a couple other channels also, but they're not in that 1st place slot. I'm not quite ready for the Am5/DDR5 stuff yet, as the games I pay just don't require that much pull, and I'm totally content at 1440p, so I'm good. Ifenwhen I do decide to upgrade, I'll be coming back here first for the details to educate myself on the specs, and price to performance. Keep up the great work!

Teamgroup RAM is pretty much the standard now in price to performance. Their T-Create RAM is also phenomenal for those that want low profile, no RGB and high performance at a lower cost. You can currently get 32GB of their 6000mhz CL30 RAM for $99.

My current PC is a mess of missmatched components: a 12700 with 32 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 4070. It was worse over a year ago. Before I bought my 4070 I was using a 6700XT that I bought for 700 EUR at the tail end of the GPU supply shortage. I had driver problems for half a year with that GPU because no drivers released between june 2022 and january of 2023 would work with that card, and then in the summer of 2023 it would overheat. RMA'd it to the store, store sent it to PowerColor, Powercolor refunded after 6 weeks, and then the store allowed me to put the entire 700 EUR return value towards a new GPU. This was in August 2023, so the 7700XT, 7800XT, 7900GRE and 40 Super series cards weren't available yet, so I went with a Gigabyte 4070 Gaming OC. Works good for now, but planning on upgrading my CPU to a 9800X3D when that releases, or a 7800X3D if the 9000 version turns out a dud as well. And then in 2026 the plan is to upgrade the GPU.

If you build new AM5 right now slap 64GB (2x32GB) on it...always! When you upgrade AM5 to 10800x3d in 3 years you only upgrade CPU and never have to worry about your RAM till the end of the platform lifecycle. It cost 100 $ more but you will use AM5 for 5+ years so the cost p.a. is laughable.

I'd say if you are still planning to buy ddr4 then you can still buy a 2x8 kit and upgrade to 32 if you really need it

Thanks man. Upgrading my PC and giving my cousin my old one for Christmas since he doesn't have a gaming pc and now I have to delve into the realm of DDR5... Very helpful guide! Also I'm transitioning from Intel to AMD so knowing about the AMD alternative to XMP was very good to know to look for.
