Can you make a list of unreliable Italian engines?
Could work as a 2 hour special.

So in the pursuit of government-dictated emissions, manufacturers are building ever more complicated engines with a short lifespan thus creating more pollution as they become premature landfill.

What's about the 1.4 Twin Charge Engine from VAG?
Problems with:
Waterpump
Supercharcher Clutch
Timing Chain
Pistons
I work in a VAG Garage in Switzerland and here everyone is saying its the most unrelieble Engine so far produced by VAG.

I do not think the BMW N57 should be on here...while it may be over-complicated, it is a world leader in diesel performance. Then N47 however SHOULD be here! Well known for timing chain failures, made wore by the fact the chain is at the back meaning changing it requires removal of the entire engine....what were BMW thinking!?

What about 2008-2011 TFSI engines? They are known for consuming up to two litres of engine oil within 1000km.

The Mercedes 3.5L OM603.97 has the nickname of "the rod bender". This is a diesel engine and has a compression ratio of 22 to 1. It was based on the previous 3.0L OM603.96. To get the extra half liter of displacement they increased the bore of the cylinder which reduced the distance between cylinder walls. It became so thin that head gaskets had a problem of failing between cylinders. Unfortunately when the head gasket fails it starts leaking coolant into the cylinder. When this occurs it hydraulics the engine taking the piston, connecting rod, and cylinder head with it. It sometimes damages the crank and engine block too.

1:33 the 1.4 tsi had way larger problems than the 1.2 tsi. The 1.2s chain is actually better and its overall more reliable than most tsis from the time (1.4, 1.8, ...)

Do a video about transmissions, like best transmissions or most complex transmissions. Would be cool to see videos about those

My father owned a A6 2.5 TDI for a few years when i was a child. I will never forget this nailing diesel truck sound.

What about the previous generation M5/M6 with the V10? Pretty much guaranteed to fail under 160000km

1:24 I had the pleasure of changing one of the rollers holding the drive belt on an A6 2.5 V6 TDI (180 hp). How hard can it be? Just loosen the belt at the generator and change the roller, 5 minute job on an older car. We had to look up the instructions how to do it (Etka? I forgot), and the first line was "remove the front bumper". WHAT...? Then remove the whole front, mask, 3 coolers, fan, plastics just to get to the belt. According to that manual in an Audi service those who do it routinely should do it in 1 h 45'. First time it took us almost 4. Next time when the generator had to be changed it was just under 3 hours.
I remember 20 years ago when cars started to become really complex, full of electronic gadgets a friend of mine asked "yeah, nice, but who's going to fix it"?

And not to mention the 2.0L TSI Audi engine which was used between 2009 and 2012. It leaded to a class action suit in the USA. Unfortunately here in South Africa no assistance was given by Audi. My A4 used about 1 liter of oil for every tank of fuel.

N54. Essentially the German 2jz. Stock 300hp to wheels and capable of 700+ with a single turbo swap. However known for wastegate rattle, vanos issues, fuel pump failure, ect.

Oh... Mercedes Benz 1.8l turbo and compressor versions. The timing chain would jump very commonly. Never really sorted. The VW 2.0l TSI had the same problems. Or the 6.0l Merc. V12... Early W140 series S classes would commonly have a chain snap (no duplex chain!). Well, basically nearly all German chains are troublesome today. Opel's 3 cylinder 1.0l ecotec... Nearly all VW engines... BMW... Mercedes... What about the first water cooled Porsche Boxers... Never possible of being oil tight. And then their common deaths... Ask Hoovie ;) Heck, all cars are made with the same (low quality untested) materials. Some are just more refined... Worst engine though would be - for me - the 2.7l V6 TDI... Single turbo that is! Gutless... Huge turbo lag. Combined with the 7 speed slush box... Jesus! A Fiat Panda twinair can whip it from a standstill until the turbo cuts in, which can sometimes take a day or two...

BMW, Mercedes, VW and Audi engines were tough as old boots back in the 80s and very early 90s. I had various types of these cars and never had any problem just regular servicing, then in the middle of the 90s and 00s things started to happen with these manufactures when major engine issues where becoming the norm. These cars were very expensive to buy, but boy the engine failures were unexceptable. They knew that they were trading of from the past as regarding reliability but got caught out from to many warranty claims and angry customers. These cars are nowhere near good form that golden era and they know it. There customer relations department are crap, all about making top profit with no regard to you. I would never buy a German car and that includes the brands under the VW banner. In the end if you have not had any problems from the engine, gearbox, aircon, suspension, abs, electrical and cracked alloy wheels(BMW) consider yourself very lucky. I went the Honda and Lexus way and use an independent mechanic thank Christ!
