There an old interview with a WW1 Vet who said he had stubbled across a German soldier and they both raised their bayonets but he was able to stab first, simply because the other guy stopped himself. He described how it haunted him for his life, because the only reason he was alive was because the other man was more civil.

And in a few short sentences, he explained the mental torture of addiction.

This is exactly what led me down a disastrous and hellish cycle of self destruction. I spent years building myself up to a standard based on as the most beneficial and positive criteria I could find from any source, since many of the people closest to me lived by values that only hurt them and those around them. When I had finally reached the precipice of mastering myself in anyway I could (mentally, physically, spiritually) I fell victim to my own hubris. I broke every rule I had made, used drugs, did the exact opposite of what I learned as a device to understand what drove so many people to live destructive lifestyles. So I became everything I learned over so many years was in direct opposition of peace, success and strength. I have spent over 10 years battling the demons I willingly let into my life and only now see some hope of becoming that person again.

If you have a code and you can see that's it's guiding you in the right direction. Don't break it for anyone, no matter what sacrifices you had to make it's all worth it. Being curious or tired or wanting simple satisfactions will never be a surrogate for disciplined, thoughtful and productive living. Good luck in the battle 💪.

This is a great point that most people rarely think about. Including me. It’s proof that morals are rooted deeper than most portray them to be. It’s not just upbringing. This is why we know we have a conscience.

Oh my god this is so true. I did break a moral rule in 2018, I still have nightmares sometimes.

I’ve broken that moral rule. I had values. I didn’t do anything that dark like child stuff or rape or anything like that, but it was plenty dark. It broke me when I fully let myself realize what I was doing yet to keep myself from fully realizing it

I 🖤Jordan. He has such a beautiful way of explaining the human condition. Even the “woke” can follow along.

Many people do operate without guilt despite having broken moral rules

See the really interesting thing is when one person wakes up at 3am for years over something which another person could sleep soundly having done. One person might be haunted for years over breaking someone's arm in a bar fight or something, but a different person would hardly remember the fight at all. Most people share a lot of things in common, but not everything, and not everyone

I think we were always meant to break certain rules so we know just how valuable they are.

The only belief system I know that has a built in therapeutic solution to the trauma of “breaking the moral rule” is confession in the Catholic Church. Those who are Catholic and have experienced confession as it should be know the relief and peace that comes from letting go of the guilt and trauma by experiencing God’s immense mercy in this sacrament of reconciliation.

That's exactly what I am going through, I broke my moral rules and now I can't live with the regret

That's the thing about Nietzsche, he full well recognized the difficulty of his way, and at no point he claimed it to be easy. The reason why Nietzsche gets associated with nihilism is that when you follow his teachings, you will fall in a pit that's deeper than the abyss. You are breaking away all the pre-existing values, all morals and everything you have been thought, and no one can do that easily. But it's wrong to say Nietzsche stood for nihilism, his focus, his goal was on rebuilding and climbing up, the destroying and falling down was only an monument on the journey, not it's end. And whatever Nietzsche says, he says for a very few people, people who have gone through what he had gone through, it was an esoteric teaching. For most people, Nietzsche recommends the bible

Edit: Looks like I've hurt someone's feelings
