When people say, “they don’t make games like they used to”, I think it’s not that they’re saying new games are bad, it’s just that the philosophy of game development really was different 30 years ago. Like System Shock. It’s a PC game from the early 90s that played a huge role in influencing later games BioShock and Prey.

Now, in the 90’s most of my PC gaming time was spent playing those JumpStart games. So, System Shock wasn’t exactly on my radar. But now it has a remake that’s apparently really faithful. So, I started playing it, and I realized this is exactly the type of game that people think about when they’re being nostalgic for the way games used to be.

After an introductory cutscene, you’re essentially just dropped into the game with almost no instructions on what to do. Progressing feels very non-linear. It’s really just up to you to explore, find weapons to use, and discover ways to access new areas.

If you’re used to newer games, where you always know exactly what your next objective is, a game like this can be a little overwhelming- it definitely is for me. But it’s also cool just to experience an old school game like this, that just trusts the player to figure it out.

I really can't wait for the System Shock 2 25th anniversary release.

This game makes you have to pay attention to audio/data logs. It doesn't hold your hand. It feels very much like a fromsoft game in terms of no way points and having to listen and comprehend what you're being told. You can't just skip through everything.

System shock 1 is brilliant, I didn’t play the remake but the enhanced edition, I love its character, music, and world building, even got all achievements. Maybe one day I’ll play the remake

i think the culture around games has a huge impact on this too, there’s a million and one play through guides, ways to watch people play, guides that are written, video guides, tips and tricks, how to execute combos or specific movement tech. it’s great that it makes games so accessible even to the newest player you could think of but it’s also harder to avoid for entrenched gamers. if i want to watch my favourite streamer then i can but it can carry a risk of them playing a game like this and not ruining the experience but you see things you should’ve seen for the first time while you were playing. it takes more restraint than some people immediately realise to just turn off that vid of a new cool indie game you saw your favourite youtuber play after 5 minutes so you can experience it for yourself through your eyes and experiences

In Lvl 2 after wandering around I couldn’t find a way to progress. I remembered that it’s important to go trough all the logs. One of them mentioned that if there is a power outage in area x, you will find a way to turn it on in area y.

This way I solved it. It just works.

OMG JumpStart! I have such fond memories of that game when I was a kid. I still have it for my Windows 98 emulator just to revisit it and other childhood PC games. System shock is great. I got into last year. Totally amazing.

Getting stuck in games = good game design.

As an RTS player, I like my functional pathing.

Somehow somewhere the UX designers today were taught they should hold the hands of players, telling them exactly where to go and what to do, and they consider that "good UX". I think I can put my fingers on a book or two that caused it but if you are ever wondering, there is your answer.

Dude we are in the fucking golden age of gaming, monetization has changed but games are more advanced, beautiful and well designed than ever, the variety is insane, and everyone that says "oh games are not like they were before" are people that only consume like 5 or 6 games and they never even bother to actually look and inform themselves.

Half life also is similar by not giving u any cutscenes except for one at the beginning and one at the end, and also not telling the exact way to get to a location. The best example would be ravenholm in half life 2 with only 1 npc that does not assist you in finding the way to another area, you are left on your own fighting zombies whilst completing puzzles that dont hint at how to complete them, making you use your brain and feel proud or rewarded for completing the puzzles with little to no assistance.

It is very hard and claustrophobic game.
System Shock 2 is somewhat less claustrophobic and easier game.

To say that games from 30 years before had another philosophy is not corect, today the sense of progression is different, 30 years ago, if you took a better weapon you just throw the old one, while today you can keep the old one.

It's not overwhelming, it's just frustrating. I've been playing games since 95, when i was 3. I'm no stranger to games that don't hold your hand. But this aspect of not telling you any damn thing is just straight up bad game design. It makes sense for a game made in the early 90s, they were still learning. But new games do this better. Tell me how to play, tell me what i need to do. Difficulty should be in the world and the enemies. Not fighting the game itself in not knowing how to play
