In this video, we're going to talk about what causes muscle cramps and what to do about it.

What causes muscle cramps and charley horses?

1. Medication (high blood pressure medication, high cholesterol medication, prednisone)
2. Too much calcium (consume high-quality European cheese instead of pills)
3. Too little magnesium (magnesium is the relaxation mineral of the muscles)
4. Too little potassium (not enough vegetables or a lot of stress)

Apple cider vinegar can mobilize calcium into the tissues and may really help alleviate cramps.

If you're deficient in vitamin B1, you may experience tenderness in your muscles. A great source of vitamin B1 is nutritional yeast.

I love how he explains the cause . If we don’t know the causes we don’t know what we have to do to fix it.. thank you you so much . You are a real blessing.

I love classic Dr. Berg. Short 3-5 minute videos, straightforward, you learn so much information so quickly. I hate that YouTube keeps disincentivizing shorter videos.

I've done some research on this and the best magnesium to take for cramps is either Magnesium Glycinate or Magnesium Malate. (Magnesium L-Threonate is also good but its more for your brain health). For Potassium, it is not recommended to take capsules as they are limited to 99mg/capsule (meaning you need to take around 40+ capsules a day) so either take Potassium powder mixed with water or juice or just eat a lot of green leafy vegetables - spinach, avocado, pumpkin, salmon, pistachio, hazelnut, almonds, coconut water, tomato, broccoli, brussel sprouts. Banana is also rich in potassium but its quite high in carbs/sugar thus i don't really recommend it.

I've read that you specifically dont' want to take calcium and magnesium together, as they compete for absorption in the body. Better to take them separately at staggered times. But IMO, with calcium, it should be acquired through food, and not supplemented. Calcium supplements can even be harmful to the heart, but calcium from food is not.

Thank you for all of this info, Dr. Berg! I forgot that too much calcium can cause cramps. I have been fine for over a year and all of a sudden it started up again. I do use nutritional yeast, the apple cider vinegar, and a magnesium supplement. Thank you again for the info!

Dr. Berg, you're awesome. Thanks for all the information you provide to so many! You have helped us and many others to live a healthier lives and my husband and I also use your supplements regularly! However, in this video you say that magnesium should be taken in a 1:1 ratio with calcium. Actually, magnesium and calcium should not be taken at the same time at all as both are powerful chelators and will bind each other up until nothing gets absorbed in the intestines! An optimal recommendation is to take calcium in the morning and magnesium in the evening, making sure to keep them separated. This is an important point for those that are desperately deficient in one or the other. We commonly see Calcium and Magnesium sold in the same supplement but we must realize that vitamin sellers (not Dr. Berg) care more about selling their products than they do about absorption. I realize this vid is from 2014 and that you have about 2500 videos to manage, but some of them may need updating.

I ran a mile today and just recently both my feet started cramping up really badly. I had to sit down and endure the pain for several seconds before they let up.

I now take magnesium glycinate or magnesium malate capsules (since they are better absorbed by the body than other kinds) every day...and I make sure I stay hydrated. I even drink water before bedtime to better keep those awful cramps away! It works! Btw, I learned how to make Mg creams and lotions so I use that too, also works on sore/aching muscles and joints.

It is important to know which kind of Magnesium to take. I was taking Mag Oxide, making my own capsules, was taking it for cramps and digestive issues however after seeing a Dermatologist for itchy spots & welts on my back and suffering for over a year with it, I began doing my own research (the Drs diagnosis was not correct) I discovered I was taking way to much and stopped. It has been several months the itching has stopped and the spots are 'slowly' going away! I don't take it anymore at all. Still have cramps and digestive issues, am working on other ways to fix that. Thank you for all of your wonderful advice.
