I had these for a couple of years in my 50's. I started taking Magnesium at bed time and I haven't had them since.

Proper hydration (not too much and certainly not too little) and sufficient Magnesium before bed and in the morning does the trick for me.

I suffer from foot and calf cramps, especially if I’m dehydrated. I have also found that taking magnesium glycinate daily and getting exercise is essential to avoiding the cramps. Simple leg stretches, calf raises, and ankle exercises before bed helps if I don’t have time to get out and walk each day.

I only drink wine on Friday nights. And every Friday night my sleep was disturbed by leg cramps. Someone suggested that I drink water after the wine to compensate for the dehydrating alcohol. I drink a glass of water every Friday night now and the cramps don't happen anymore : D

I have found that tucking the sheets and blankets in under the mattress too tightly gives me cramps every time. Leave enough looseness for your foot to be upright should REALLY help

What surprises me is that the US govt has NOT wasted MILLIONS of dollars to find out why you get these at night.

I get them, mainly in my foot, it have had them all the way up my leg, extremely painful! I have discovered, 1) if I drink alcohol late in the day, I may dehydrate or upset electrolyte balance. And 2), if I do get them, I get up and take a glass of fruit juice with high potassium content, or water and some potassium chloride. The cramps are gone in a couple of minutes. I do take magnesium and calcium supp’s, as well as Vitamin D, so don’t think it’s a deficiency in those. But the potassium works for me.

Dr Prashant Jain, please make a slightly longer video to cover the way one can prevent the cramps and what are some home remedies! When can these cramps become dangerous? When should we seek medical attention?

Mine are from my spinal arthritis and stenosis. If I have a rough/very active day I take ibuprofen with a snack at bedtime. I drink a few sips of tonic water (quinine) during the night if I'm awakenwd by a wicked leg/foot cramp.

I am 49 yo and have had leg cramps early in the morning only after I had exercised or worked in the field the day before. I learnt it was caused by lost of electrolite through sweat. When cramp happens I swallow with water a little bit of table salt ( like half tea spoon) and cured within seconds. If I don't, it will take a week for pain to go. For preventive measure, I do the same.

I used to get them really bad, until I figured out that they mostly happened when I let my calves get cold - i.e. from hanging them out of the bedcovers when I slept. So I made sure to keep my legs underneath the covers, and to wear pajama bottoms and socks in bed during the colder winter months. Now I barely get them at all - in fact, the only times I do get them is when I don't do all of the things to keep my calves warm in bed.
