There are tons of reasons why your laptop or PC is slow, and everyone’s computer is going to be different. I decided to round up the 10 most common causes and the best tips you can follow along to make your computer run like brand new.
There’s nothing wrong with your computer, it’s perfectly fine. Well, probably not if you clicked on this video. But it will be. You just need to follow along with these 10 steps for a lightning speed computer. Let’s go.
2. Too much bloat. Use CCleaner and defrag your computer. Delete any unused files and clean up your disks. Make sure all your disks have at least 15% free disk space. Also use CCleaner tools panel to uninstall unnecessary programs.
Delete or move any files off your desktop. This really has a big effect on start-up time.
3. Make sure your OS is up to date as well as all your drivers and applications. This isn’t just for speed but also security. Viruses and malware target older OS’s.
4. Your hardware is dirty. Dust really does slow down your computer as it causes fans to work slower by blocking them, your computer gets hotter, it throttles harder and takes more up resources. If your computer is noisy it’s usually a good sign you’ve got a build-up of dust.
5. Your CPU can get hot if it’s receiving insufficient airflow. Starts from dust built up that’s hindering fans to work properly. This can burn away the thermal paste that allows the CPU’s fan to cool the CPU. Without the paste – the fan can spin at lightning speed with nearly no effect. When that paste dries up and is gone, the CPU will throttle down in a very significant way.
The CPU is the heart of your computer. You don’t want that malfunctioning. It’s worth buying some thermal paste (link above) and taking apart your CPU fan to apply the paste. Trust me.
6. Viruses and malware. If your computer is infected it will take up resources and slow down the things you want to work on. You need anti-virus or anti-malware programs.
7. Run your computer off an SSD. You can keep all your files on an external or internal hard drive but to boot and load your programs off an SSD will madly improve its speed loading files.
8. Use passmark’s performance test.
9. Go from power-saver to high-performance.
10. Go to command prompt. Type cmd in search.
a. Check Drive Health / Status - Type WMIC.
b. Check for drive errors: CHKDSK. Will repair some errors.
c. Sfc /scannow – system file checker.
d. Check for memory errors: windows memory diagnostic.
If you’ve decided you just want to upgrade your hardware, I would probably do it in this order: 1. Make sure you have an SSD. 2. I would get more RAM. Especially if you only have 8GB or less. 3. I would get a better CPU.
