What sort of pc do you have and does it slow down? let me know below

Blank tabs won't stress out the CPU or ram as much as graphic heavy pages, right Brian? I guess if those graphic heavy pages aren't displayed then they won't affect things

Open up tab after tab without anything loaded, sounds like wondering if my car engine works harder idling in the driveway or going 100. You should be proud of yourself, you're so helpful.

MIne runs fast becuse I use an SSD and I don't mess around with utilities that mess it up. I also have 16GB of RAM

For me there is nothing wrong with using an old pc. We expect it to not be as fast running new OSs and apps as a modern fully powered monster of a pc.

The only real gripe I have running Windows 10 on an old 3rd Gen I5 processor is the fact that opening a file requester on a folder with many files for the first time per session can take quite a while as it sorts the output into order for the display. Subsequent reads are cached and a lot quicker.

Other than that it is adequate for most uses.

Preventing windows from deleting thumbnails on shutdown also speeds things up when dealing with the picture folder.

A newer pc should certainly be faster as it is more likely to be designed to run bigger more complex applications.

Gamers obviously need a more cutting edge machine for their enjoyment but for productivity software it is not quite as essential. Although it would be nice to have.

Thank you, Brian. I have an 8 1/2-year-old Lenovo ThinkCentre Core i5-4570 (3.20GHz) with 16GB RAM running 10 Pro on a Samsung EVO 500GB SSD. It seems to run well enough for what I use it for I use it for which is mainly a ScanSnap iX500 scanner and storing stuff. Because of the light use, it doesn't really slow down. Replacing the HDD with an SSD made a big difference. That was done about 3 or 4 years ago. It all gets backed up locally and to the cloud. So, when it does quit, I can restore to a new PC.

Thanks Brian, great info as always. I see you're using VMware Workstation for your Windows VM's, how do you compare VMware to VirtualBox and which program is best suited to which particular OS? Thanks from New Zealand :)

Hello, in a PC I have the uTorrent client, sometimes get slow especially internet connection speed, if the torrent client start seeding a torrent download, in big bandwidth, if I detect this is the cause, I can do setup setting seeding the torrent to other clients in limited/lower upload bandwidth…

Opening up all the browser tabs empty: Wouldn't it be fair to put load on them such as loading websites.? 1000 Empty tabs is comparable to 1000 empty boxes. It would be fair to put weight/Load on each box/instance.

Good one Brian and my main laptop with an i7 -10510U in it with 16GB of RAM in my task manager I find that a lot of memory is gobbled up (47% total) by Edge - around 2.5GB alone and background settings, especially the Asus ones. Would changing to Google Chrome help at all? and what can one do with those background settings a lot that I don't know what they do?

Intel i7-930, 6GB DDR3 RAM, 1 TB HDD 25% full, liquid CPU cooler, Win10 Pro 21H2, Windows Defender, 100Mbps internet connection. It seems to be fine when running, but startup is so slow: ~3-1/2 minutes bootup with another 1 minute for Desktop to finish. I only have 9 Startup programs, and half must be necessary. It seems to have gotten worse a few years ago, and I've picked at it ever since with no big success (cleaning, disabling, uninstalling...). 150 processes, 2100 threads, 60, 000 handles. I always felt that it got slower as Google Chrome added more and more things; I tried Brave, and it is better, but I have certain problems with my banking login (hangs).

Funny thing is, I got an even lesser broken computer that I "fixed" (albeit virtually nothing on it), and it has a fast bootup.

The homepage tabs with only a search bar in them won't slow down most of the PCs, try opening tabs with some content in them or better yet a few YouTube videos in 1080 or 1440p the difference will be noticable right away 🙂. 16Gb of RAM is the recommended minimum nowadays. I'd go with 32 personally. RAM is the second cheapest upgrade one can right after switching to an SSD or NVMe drive.

Older one but it works fine,

I5 - 2400
12GB Ram
Kingston SSD for system
GTX 1050 graphics card
Windows 10 home

I have a 2014 hp laptop and it’s very slow, all I use it for is to play the sims, it was good for awhile, but the more packs come out the slower it gets, I honestly can’t afford a new one right now, when this came out it was almost 700$, and it was a Xmas gift, I’m trying to save, my laptop still looks quite new, I take care of it, but I’m not tech savvy to say the least, I know a lil basic and that’s it, I appreciate you sharing these videos.

Since buying a mini pc a few months ago (NucBox5) I hardly ever use my main PC these days. It's very small, sips power, so easier on the bills, and has no problem streaming and playing 4k video. I don't use it for gaming or video editing so works great for my use of just regular everyday type of stuff.

Peace

I’m using a 2 year old Toshiba laptop and it takes FOREVER to boot up to the desktop!! 17.3 screen, 12 G Ram, 2 TB HDD, 10th generation I3, quad core-1.2 ghz. Running W11. When it’s finally done, it’s fine but at least 5-6 minutes to load. 😢

Mine is slow because of a running DCOM server proces launcher that uses 100% CPU. Any ideas on that? it's driving me nuts
