Preventing a Chinese Invasion of Taiwan | UnArchived

If China were to make a military invasion of Taiwan, it might begin by targeting the Quemoy or Matsu Islands, much like it did in the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis. The responses from America and Taiwan then reveal that defense treaties act as an effective deterrent. In addition, establishing clear boundaries of engagement can discourage further aggression.

China’s recent history of illegal wars, occupations, regime change, and proxy wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen, are a concern for us all.

Would you agree that things are different versus 1958?

This is logic is flawed. The clip references the 1958 example which was 6 years before China successfully tested their first nuclear weapon. Today China is the 3rd largest holder of nuclear weapons. To ignore this fact and pretend it is of no consequence is a folly. With US power in serious atrophy and China a rising power, it is disingenuous to pretend the 1958 comparison is a valid. Dare I say it, today's situation is entirely different - wish it was as simple as you suggest.

I sometimes think Westerners don’t really appreciate how important Taiwan is to China.

Their sense of nationality is incomplete with Taiwan. China without Taiwan is like America without freedom of speech. That’s how important this is to China.

This is because the non-reunification of Taiwan to China is a colonial scar - a scar inflicted during China’s century of humiliation.

As long as Taiwan is not reunited with the mainland, the humiliation is not over, and China’s national dignity remains incomplete.

Not saying whether that is correct or not, but that is their genuine view, it’s not espoused merely for propagandistic purposes.

In fact they are so genuine about this view that they will risk existential war with the whole West to take Taiwan back.

China’s refusal to budge on Taiwan is negotiation in good-faith. Regaining Taiwan has deeper meaning to China than America’s superficial concern with losing prestige in this matter.

why can't China accept that Taiwan is an independent country that wants liberal democracy? The Chinese talk about non-interference and respect to sovereignty but don't apply it themselves.

Thank you very much for this short video. It does provide useful information for defending Taiwan.

Preventing a Chinese Invasion of Taiwan would be to recognise the current status Quo

Informative video. I think on option 3 you meant Taipei itself, otherwise you are repeating option 1.

The scenario is based on outdated facts, since Chinese naval capabilities have grown significantly since the situation described.

That was then. This is now. This no longer holds true.

Sounds like China should increase its military spending

The last ten seconds of the video actually address the title of the video. The first 95% is a history lesson about the Formosan Strait Crisis I and II. The best way to defend Taiwan would be to legalize private gun ownership. That's it.

Thanks this gives me more than I had before I saw it. Is that agreement still running today?

On 15 October 1971 the representatives of 22 UN members requested the UN Secretary-General to distribute, as an official Assembly document, a statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China dated 20 August 1971.[4] In this statement, made in response to the U.S. letter of 17 August 1971 and its accompanying explanatory memorandum, the People's Republic of China declared that the U.S. proposal was a blatant exposure of the Nixon government's scheme of creating "two Chinas" in the United Nations. It added that there was only one China, the People's Republic of China.[4] Taiwan, it continued, was an inalienable part of Chinese territory and a province of China which had already been returned to the motherland after the Second World War.[4] It went on to state that the U.S. was plotting to separate Taiwan from China and was wildly attempting to force members of the UN to submit to its will.

China would wipe out most of American forces in the region in a preemptive strike this time. So ambiguity is better.

Preventing Chinese invasion is easy.

1. Issue every citizen of fighting age a basic modern military rifle and a limited amount of ammunition.

2. Set up armories in all medium to large population centers with light anti-tank rocket launchers. These should be staffed by retirees of sound mind and reputation. Anti-tank weapons and rifle ammunition will be handed out like candy in the event of invasion.

3. In the event of invasion, any set of Chinese tags turned in with a pair of ears, is good for a one year personal income tax credit. Effects are cumulative.

Otlhet military focused preparations are also advised.
