The Taiwanese civilians training for a Chinese invasion

Kuo Chiu, known as KC to his friends, teaches urban design at Tunghai University in Taiwan. He’s also one of many of the country's citizens who practises rifle skills in his spare time, in case of a Chinese invasion.

The population of Taiwan has long grown familiar with Beijing’s pledge to one day ‘unify’ what it claims is a breakaway province. But recently, there has been a significant increase in aggressive and intimidatory acts.

Taiwan’s 160,000 active military personnel are vastly outnumbered by China’s 2 million-member armed forces, leading many civilians to turn to voluntary medical and combat training to protect themselves.

The Guardian's video team spent time with KC to see how he is preparing.

It's better to be a warrior in a garden than to be a gardener in war.

This is a real-world example of a well-regulated militia being necessary for the security of a free state.

This is very concerning that the world is rapidly sliding towards a full scale conflict.

Government needs to start allowing citizens to own firearms.

This shows how saddening this world is becoming- civilians have to train for an invasion- something nobody should have to do or fear for in their life.

To Taiwan from Myanmar: If there is a will, there is a way. To the Taiwanese people training for self defense, please remember Bruce Lee's philosophy: “Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
― Bruce Lee

War never changes. War will always exist.

Self reliance is very empowering. Every person should maintain first aid training skills. Understanding how to defend yourself and your community is a life skill. Basic emergency preparedness for natural or man made disasters gives comfort over uncertainty.

Taiwan is surrounded by water on all sides, unlike Ukraine. They can take advantage of it

"Look at other places where the Chinese aggression is asserted: they're always on the losing side." True! This dude just roasted the Chinese. 😂

It’s great to see citizens of Taiwan be proactive and inform themselves and train for these scenarios. At the same time it saddens me to know they’re preparing for something that will happen sooner or later. The world is heading to another war, how many lives will pay?

It doesn't matter how many times the Chinese regime repeats the *lies, *
or how *angry* it pretends to be,
- Taiwan 🇹🇼 is still an independent country.

Taiwan should change their laws over firearms so their citizens can start training with *real* weapons. Training with air soft has some usefulness I’m sure, but the recoil from a real gun is a lot different.
