China is seeking to avoid taking a hit from U.S.-led sanctions against Russia, a top diplomat said, in an effort to prevent the world's second-biggest economy getting caught up in the fallout of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. "China is not a party to the crisis, nor does it want the sanctions to affect China," Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a phone call with Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares to discuss the war in Ukraine. Rosalind Mathieson reports on Bloomberg Television.

The agreement that Russia and China signed only takes effect if either country is being invaded. Not the other way around by being the invader to another country. So Russia can't get mad at China for not helping them and being dragged down for their stupid mistakes.

That must mean China will help Russia in more secretive ways—not that they won’t help.

This befuddles a lot. The US threatens to impose secondary sanctions on China if it does side with it against Russia. However, there is no such threat to India who abstained from the UN voting against Russia as did China. This is more relevant for India to align itself with the US interests as India is a member of the QUAD along with Japan and Australia.

The current crisis stems from the East Expansion of NATO, in which China is not involved at all. Whether NATO admits Ukraine as a member or not, China has no say at all. Again, China does not share any geopolitical interests in what Putin wants to achieve in this conflict like the demilitarization of Ukraine and it remains a neutral state to NATO. So, how the hell that China gets implicated in this?

I would like to take China’s response with a grain of salt. That government always say something that appears acceptable to everyone and then do something differently. 😩

China is more realistic than Russia, and also China is good at weighing cost and benefit of any military action...

I think it'd be great if russia just found themselves fighting this all alone, after all they started it all alone and now their swagger doesn't seem so arrogant. Let them deal with the mess they've made.

China better not help Russia if they know whats best for them

That is the most masterfully crafted, pithy, clear but evasive non-sentence I've ever read.

China needs our business.... yeah but we also need China's business. We have not done the hard needed work to step away from China. This dependency economically goes both ways, so I don't trust this as a reason they will refrain from getting involved. It'll be as easy as what the EU is experiencing now, trying to step away from Russian oil.

Nahh yall are wrong. China would definitely help russia if it werent for the Americans pesky sanctions. China has always looked out for their Number 1 in the end. China

Whatever comes of this let it be a warning to us all of the possibility. Let us all pray for the diplomacy and care that our leaders must show for their power in this world.

That proves, when you’re a bully in the block who picks up a fight with a little kid to make an example of. But then, the victim ends up giving you a bloody nose in a fight…every body including your own cronies start shunning you without fear of your wrath.

Tbh China will always be business minded at the end of the day, they will always prioritize their economy .. as a half Chinese I noticed how business minded they are and super traditional and old school conservative too so idk if they’re willing to risk that.
