Need help pruning your roses this winter? Learn how to cut and shape your rose bushes for healthier spring growth. Roses can take more than you might think. These four simple steps will have you pruning your roses in no time.

In Southern California we prune roses in January, but you can get away with it in late February too. Don't wait too long or new growth will make pruning more difficult. Generally speaking, do this major pruning as roses head into dormancy, whenever that is in your climate, or right before they break dormancy. If you don't know when that is, you might want to talk to your local nursery professional and they will be able to give you a ballpark timing.

Short but sweet and full of good information. Other videos 10 to 25 mins of a whole lotta talk to get commercial hits. You are a gem. Thank you!!!

So helpful. Wish there were more closeups with each cut. The bit about the rain and the bud...so useful!

I don't typically post comments on YouTube but I'd thought this would be an ideal time for an exception. I live in Phoenix, Arizona and have been tending (rather poorly) a rose bush on my property. I'd always thought that pruning was strictly small snippets here and there and decided to look up a video to learn the proper way to do it. Yours was amongst the first and taught me that, not only was I pruning improperly, but the majority of my bush was actually dead and rotting away. Hopefully I've saved it in time, but I wanted to extend my gratitude to you for educating me and sharing your knowledge with the world.

One giant overgrown climbing rose Bush that faces beautifully to my neighbour who pruned it on his own side of the fence, lol. The garden was left unattended for a year and a half so with no experience I'm attempting to take over an experienced gardeners landscapes including two rose bushes.
There are so many plant species, bushes, flowers and hedges. So I will need to abuse you tube to learn about them and hope I can slowly identify them. Its fun gardening. I actually love it as I've never had the privilege of owning a piece of land. It has already been landscaped by a gardener very intensively to house bird and bee life. I'm following my instinct now. Thank you for filming your knowledge and insights. A lovely gifted lady sharing with the world, I hope I can follow your lead.

I purchased my mother a little itty-bitty small rose "plant" for mother's day 3 year's ago. Today it's a beautiful thriving rose "bush." I've never pruned it and it's bloomed but never to the extent it should be blooming. This is my first time ever doing it so ty very much for the detailed and informative video.
