Deadhead Roses for More Flowers

Deadheading is a simple pruning technique to help cleanup your roses after a flush of blooms - removing those spent flowers also encourages the shrub to return to flowering sooner. In this video, I'll show you how to deadhead individual blooms as well as cluster-flowering roses. A bit later on in the video, I show discuss how to deadhead and stage your perennials - also in an effort to reduce the "pause" after blooming.

If you find these videos useful, here are a few things you can do to help us out:

How fate led me to you is something I will be ever grateful for. New (to us) home has 2 shrub roses planted 20 years ago, and after watching your detailed video it is clear why I got zero second blooms last year. 😂

Learned so much in so little time. Will deadhead far better this year. Thank you from your new subscriber.

Yours are about the only videos I find truly helpful! I am a novice rose gardener and most videos start above my head using terms and practises not explained and I'm left frustrated and confused. You're a good and thorough teacher. Much obliged.

Thank you so much for this!! I've inherited my Grandmother's home and her 35 year old rose garden🌹 along with it. Growing up in Washington D.C., the yards on our lots within the city are *VERY* small (generally about 6x9 ft or smaller) and in the past it was typical to populate these limited spaces with rose bushes and hydrangeas. Every block becoming its own undulating sea of color during bloom times.. giving us all a great sense of pride in our community.
Sadly, as a kid I paid very little attention to her toilings in the garden and now that it is mine I want to keep it beautiful and healthy, just as she did. Thank you again for all your much needed tips.

We purchased a house with many rose bushes. I’ve gardened all my life, but not had roses and knew nothing about them. This video was an excellent teaching video to give me confidence that I can properly take care of my new garden.

It is so nice to hear instruction from someone that is not only highly knowledgeable about the subject of roses, but explains the reasons behind the methods. It certainly clears up some misconceptions and helps to equip a more knowledgeable gardener!

My mother instructed me back in the fifties to always remove dead roses at the “five leaf” which I still do today. Thanks to your video I now know that there’s a reason behind it and not just some old family tradition that I follow for no other reason than that it always brings Mom to mind with a smile. Thanks :-)

This is my first year planting several rose bushes and I didn't like the unsightly shriveled roses after blooming so beautifully and I went around snipping them off. Little did I know, that was the right thing to do! 👍
